DENTAL ANATOMY Dr. Hagar Sherif (BDS, MSc, Phd) Lecturer of Oral Biology, Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University. PERMANENT MAXILLARY LATERAL INCISOR ❑1st Evidence of Calcification 1 Year ❑Enamel Completed 4 to 5 Years ❑Eruption 8 to 9 Years ❑Root Completed 11 Years MAXILLARY LATERAL INCISOR The Maxillary lateral incisor supplements the central incisor in function. It resemble the central incisor in form but smaller in size. The crown has more curvature with a rounded incisal ridge & rounded incisal angles mesially & distally. ANOMALIES OF THE PERMANENT MAXILLARY LATERAL INCISOR 3 1 Peg-shaped lateral incisor Missing lateral incisor Variations of Permanent Maxillary Lateral Incisor 1.Congenitally missing 2.Peg lateral 3.Lingual pit & groove ✓ The presence of a palatogingival groove in maxillary incisors may be a predisposing factor in localized periodontal disease also referred to as palatoradicular groove. 4. Lingual tubercle Incisal Labial Lingual Mesial Distal No. of roots It has one root. Labial Aspect 1. Geometric shape of crown: Trapezoidal 2. Outline form: Mesial outline: slightly convex ✓ crest of curvature at the junction of middle and incisal 1/3s (contact area). MI angle: rounded Distal outline: more convex M D D ✓ crest of curvature at the center of middle 1/3. DI angle: more rounded Incisal outline: curved & rounded. The cervical line: Convex root wise. Labial Aspect 3. The Root: ▪ The root length is greater in proportion to the crown than that of the maxillary central. ▪ The root tapers evenly about 2/3 of its length M D then curves distally. D ▪ It ends in a pointed apex Lingual Aspect The outline is a mirror image of that of the labial The tooth tapers towards the lingual The elevations: 1- The cingulum ( present at cervical 1/3). 2- Marginal ridges. - Mesial marginal ridge. - Distal marginal ridge. 3- Incisal ridge. The depressions: - The lingual fossa is more concave and circumscribed. Mesial aspect The mesial aspect is similar to that of a small maxillary central incisor, except : The crown is shorter, so the root appears longer in proportion to the crown. The incisal portion is thicker and more rounded. The root: It is a tapered cone with blunt apex. Distal aspect Is similar to that of the mesial, except: -The crown is thicker. -The cervical line is shallower than mesially. Incisal aspect Usually resembles the central incisor but is exhibits more convexity labially and lingually. Triangular Shape Labial outline: broad and more convex Lingual convergence Any Questions ?
