Maxillary Nerve Anatomy PDF

Summary

This document provides a detailed description of the course and branches of the maxillary nerve. It outlines the nerve's pathway through various anatomical structures, including the cranial cavity, pterygopalatine fossa, infratemporal fossa, and orbit. Furthermore, it details the branches of the maxillary nerve, including the ganglionic branches, zygomatic nerves, and posterior superior alveolar nerve, specifying their functions and distribution.

## Course of Maxillary Nerve - Cranial Cavity: Nerve passes to lateral wall of Cavernous Sinus - Passes through Foramen Rotundum - To Enter Pterygopalatine Fossa - Pass through Pterygomaxillary fissure - To enter Infratemporal Fossa - Crosses the fossa and passes through inferior orbital fissure - To enter Orbit (to become infraorbital nerve) - It runs on floor of orbit through orbital groove to enter the face ## Enumerate Branches of Maxillary Nerve - **Cranial Cavity:** - In Pterygopalatine Fossa: - Two ganglionic branches - Zygomatic nerve (2 branches) - Post-sup alveolar nerve - **Meningeal Nerve to dura** ## Enumerate Branches of Infraorbital Nerve - Middle Superior alveolar nerve - Anterior Superior alveolar nerve - Palpebral branch - Nasal branch - Labial branch ## Meningeal Branch - It is given off near Foramen Rotundum - It supplies dura mater of Ant and middle cranial fossae ## Enumerate branches in Pterygopalatine Fossa - **Ganglionic Branches:** - They connect Maxillary nerve to pterygopalatine ganglion - They provide sensory fibers to orbital periosteum, mucous membrane of nose, palate and pharynx. - **Zygomatic nerves:** Entering through inferior orbital fissure and divides into 2 branches: - Zygomatico facial - Supplies skin over zygomatic bone - Zygomaticotemporal - Supplies skin over ant. temporal fossa - **Posterior Superior alveolar nerve:** It divides into 3 branches: - 2 branches enter posterior wall of maxilla above tuberosity and supply 3 molar teeth. - 1 branch pierces buccinator and supply adjoining parts of gingiva and cheek. ## Enumerate branches of infraorbital canal - Middle Superior alveolar nerve - Arises from infraorbital nerve - It runs along lateral wall of maxillary sinus - It divides into branches that supply maxillary premolars and mesiobuccal root of first molar teeth - Anterior Superior alveolar nerve - Arises from infraorbital canal near mid point - It runs in anterior wall of maxillary antrum and divides into branches that supply canine and incisors - There is a nasal branch of this nerve ends in nasal septum ## Branches given on face - Palpebral branches: Skin over lower eyelid - Nasal branches: Skin of nose and tip of nasal septum - Superior labial branches: Skin over anterior part of cheek and upper lip including mucous membrane and labial glands.
