# You Can Change Matter Sometimes you can change the features of matter. You can change solid matter by cutting, bending, and folding it. You can change matter by tearing, taking it apart, and breaking it. You take a ball of clay. You make an animal shape. You change the features of the clay. You can change the clay back to its original shape. Large machines are used to mix and pour concrete to make a sidewalk. # Matter Changes in Many Ways You can make orange juice from fresh oranges. You change the solid fruit into a liquid. You cannot change the orange juice back into oranges though! Matter does not always change in the exact same way. Sometimes you can undo the change you made. Sometimes you cannot. You make a change in matter. The object you changed looks different from its original shape or form. A flat piece of paper can be used for writing or coloring. If you make a paper animal, the paper looks completely different. The paper animal also has a different purpose. You play with the animal, you don't write on it. # Matter Can Change Think about the sidewalk at school. The sidewalk is made of matter. **Matter** is anything that takes up space. The sidewalk is a solid, but it is made up of three types of matter including liquid water. Here is how to build a sidewalk. First, you need three ingredients: water, sand, and cement. Next, mix the sand and cement together. Then, slowly add the water until the mixture is almost too hard to stir. Now, these ingredients are called concrete. Finally, your concrete is ready to pour to make your sidewalk.
