The denominator of the rational number indicates the number of equal parts into which the first unit has been divided whereas the numerator indicates as to how many of these parts are to be taken into consideration. Properties of Numbers : 1. Closure : (a) Whole Numbers : Whole numbers are closed under : l Addition : eg. 0 + 8 = 8 and 5 + 6 = 11 are whole numbers. l Multiplication : eg. 0 × 5 = 0 and 4 × 5 = 20 are whole numbers. Whole numbers are not closed under : l Subtraction : eg. 7 – 10 = – 3, which is not a whole number. 3 l Division : eg. 3 ÷ 7 = , which is not a whole numbers. 7 (b) Integers : Integers are closed under : l Addition : eg. – 7 + 3 = – 4, an integer. l Subtraction : eg. 8 – 3 = 5 and 3 – 5 = – 2 are integers. l Multiplication : eg. 7 × 9 = 63 and – 7 × 9 = – 63 are integers. Linear equation in one variable : An equation is called linear equation if it has only one degree i.e., the highest power of the variable appearing in equation is 1, and the form of linear equation is x P(x) = ax + b = 0, e.g., x + 5 = 0, – 7 = 15. 2 Solving an equation : Solving an equation means determining its root i.e., determining (finding) the value of the variable which satisfies it. A linear equation may have any rational number, as its solution. An equation may have linear expression on both sides of the equation. Some equations may not be linear in the beginning, but they can be brought to be linear by using usual methods. The utility of linear equations is in their diverse applications, different problems on numbers, ages, perimeters, combination of currency notes and so on can be solved using linear equations. A number which satisfies an equation is called the solution of the equation. A term may be transposed from one side of the equation to the other side, but its sign will be changed. 15 Ex. 1. Open Curve : A curve which does not end at the same starting point or which does not cut itself is called an open curve. Closed Curve : A curve which cut itself or which starts and ends at the same point is called closed curve. Thus, square of x = (x × x), denoted by x2.
