MANISHA GAZED at the flickering candles on her birthday cake. 'Make a wish,' Mum said. Manisha took a deep breath, made her wish, and blew out the candles. 'What did you wish for?' Mum asked. 'If I tell you, it won't come true,' Manisha answered. The next morning Manisha ran to the kitchen. Her wish wasn't there. She checked the laundry. Her wish wasn't there. She even checked under her bed. But her wish wasn't there. Manisha flopped on the couch. 'What's wrong?' Mum asked. 'My wish didn't come true,' Manisha cried. 'Wishes take time.' Mum hugged Manisha. 'You can't rush a wish.' At school, Manisha's friend Emily ran to greet her. 'Did your wish come true?' Emily asked. Manisha shook her head. 'Maybe you need to make the wish again. I make wishes by blowing away all the seeds from a dandelion.' Emily handed Manisha a dandelion. Manisha took a deep breath, made her wish, and blew the dandelion seeds. The seeds danced off in the breeze. During lunch, Manisha's friend Luca sat next to her. 'Did your wish come true?' Luca asked. Manisha shook her head. 'Maybe you need to make the wish again. I make wishes on coins and toss them in a fountain.' Luca led Manisha to the school fountain and handed her a coin. Manisha took a deep breath, made her wish, and threw the coin into the fountain. *Splash.* On the way home, Manisha spotted her friend Jun. 'Did your wish come true?' Jun asked. Manisha shook her head. 'Maybe you need to make the wish again. I make wishes on red pieces of fabric and tie them to our wishing tree. It's in my backyard, I'll show you,' Jun said smiling. Manisha followed Jun to a large tree full of red ribbons. She took a deep breath, wrote down her wish and tied the ribbon to the tree. At home Manisha looked for her wish. But it still hadn't arrived. 'Did your wish come true?' Nana asked. Manisha shook her head. 'Maybe you need to make the wish again. I make wishes on peacock feathers and keep them safe in my notebook,' Nana explained. Nana handed Manisha a peacock feather. Manisha took a deep breath, made her wish, and slipped the peacock feather in her notebook. 'Your wish will come true, I know it will,' Nana said. 'All you have to do is believe.' By night, Manisha's wish still hadn't arrived. She sat sadly in her garden, looking up at the stars. 'Did your wish come true?' Mum asked. Manisha shook her head. 'Maybe you need to make the wish again. I make wishes on the brightest star in the night sky,' Mum explained. Manisha took a deep breath, made her wish, and stared hopefully at the brightest star. 'What if my wish doesn't come true?' Manisha asked. 'It will.' Mum smiled. 'You just need to believe it will, and have a little patience. You can't rush wishes.' Just then there was a knock on the door. 'Manisha, I think your wish has arrived,' Nana called. Manisha ran to the door. Standing in front of her was her dad. She beamed. She threw her arms around her dad. 'My wish came true!' Dad hugged Manisha back. 'You were my wish too,' he whispered.
