INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY MAN AND HIS ENVIRONMENT At the end of the lesson, you should be able to: a. Notice disorder in an environment. b.Notice things that are not in their proper place and organize them in an aesthetic way. c. Show that care for the environment contributes to health, well-being and sustainable development. d.Demonstrate the virtues of prudence and frugality towards the environment. When did it happen and who are those responsible of changes happen? “Humankind is a part of the world, and we significantly affect our environment in the same way that changes in our environment affect us” – Ramos, 2015 What is Environmental Philosophy? The branch of philosophy that is concerned with the natural environment and humanity’s place within it. It is concerned with humanity’s role in the natural world, the interaction between nature and human activities, and humanity’s response to environmental challenges. Views of Philosophical Education 1.Anthropocentrism - belief that humans are the central and most significant species on the planet. - Humans are considered the primary cause that drives changes in the environment. Views of Philosophical Education 2. Deep Ecology – sees the natural world as being maintained by the interrelationship among living organisms and that every living thing on the planet is dependent on each other for survival. - This view regards human interference as a significant threat to the natural world and all living things. Gaia Hypothesis - suggests that all living things and living things on the planet play a significant role in maintaining balance in the environment as they interact with living organisms to regulate the various systems that enable life to continue thriving on earth. Biocentrism - believes that humans are not the only significant species on the planet, and that all other organisms have inherent value and should be protected. -This view advocates ethical treatment of animals. Ecocentrism- places great value on ecosystems and biological communities. - believes that humankind is a part of a greater biological system or community and that we have a significant role as stewards or guardians of nature. - promotes the idea that order and balance in nature bring about stability and beauty. Theological Views – man is intended to live in harmony with all creation, not to exploit and destroy but to care for nature and the environment, enhance it, and contribute to its growth and development. What is Environmental Aesthetics? “ A philosophical view that believes in maintaining order in the environment will bring out the natural beauty of surroundings and contribute to the well-being of the people and other organisms living in it” (Endriga, 2017). Prudence It is the capacity to direct and discipline one’s activities and behavior using reason. It is the behavior that is cautious and, as much as possible, keeps away from any risks. is considered as the first and most vital among the four cardinal virtues, which include justice, fortitude, and temperance. What is Prudence and Frugality? Is prudence applicable to the challenges that the various environmental problems have brought? prudence can help us become wiser, more responsible in terms of using our natural resources and, most importantly, become more appreciative of nature’s essential value. What is Prudence and Frugality? Frugality another fundamental value that can help us develop a sense of right and wrong and attain whatever we want in life. it is a virtue that can guide us in making choices in life and receiving the most value out of those decisions. It is the quality of being thrifty. It is the careful supervision of one’s resources. What is Prudence and Frugality? How can frugality help in solving environmental problems? - one of the main benefits of being a frugal person is that it is environmentally friendly. When someone is being frugal in using natural resources like electricity and water, this person is putting lesser damage on our natural environment.
