Explain the concept of unitive and procreative health 2. Discuss the theories related to procreation 3. Explain the process of human reproduction CHAPTER CONTENT: CONCEPT OF UNITIVE AND PROCREATIVE HEALTH Unitive -is a specific type of physical union, the sexual union of a man and a woman in natural intercourse. - type of sexual act is in harmony with, and ordered toward, the other meanings: marital and procreative. Procreation- It is the process by which an organism produces others of its biological kind. This may also refer to the sexual activity of conceiving and bearing offspring. This type of sexual act is inherently ordered toward the creation of new human life. Issues of Procreation sex without reproduction reproduction without sex reproduction in menopause reproduction without gametes. Ethics have always focused on sexuality and its moral regulation. The above presented issues is believed by some religious moralist as 'dehumanizing' the reproductive process. Intercourse is totally justifiable only in order to procreate and early Christian teaching on sexuality is focused on abstinence, this is because Christ himself defined celibacy as a better life choice for human beings (Benagiono, 2009) Theories of Procreation 1. Theory of Evolution- Formulated by Charles Darwin in 1859 The theory of evolution is a scientific theory that essentially states that species change over time. - Primitive life evolved into more and more complex organisms, and eventually producing mankind. Evolutionary theory requires the assumption of billions of years for its processes. 2. Biblical Theory- Creation/ creationism - a belief that nature, and its aspect, such as the universe, earth, life and humans, originated from a supernatural being. -God created the world and all that's in it, including humans, and they reproduce thorough sexual intercourse Process of Human Reproduction - Reproduction in humans and other mammals is the process by which sperm and egg cellS are produced - Mammals reproduce by uniting sperm and egg internally in the female body by a process called internal fertilization - Many mammals reproduce only during particular seasons of the year; not so with humans. Men produce sperm more or less continuously and women ovulate about once a month. - Human reproduction takes place as internal fertilization by sexual intercourse. During this process, the sperm then travels through the vagina and cervix into the uterus or fallopian tubes for fertilization of the ovum. Upon successful fertilization and implantation, gestation of the fetus then occurs within the female's uterus, called pregnancy. REFERENCES: Conte, R.(2011).
