A carriageway generally consists of several traffic lanes together with any associated shoulder, but may be a sole lane in width (for example, a highway offramp) Dual Carriageway A dual carriageway or divided highway is a class of highway with carriageways for traffic travelling in opposite directions separated by a central reservation or median. Roads with two or more carriageways which are designed to higher standards with controlled access are generally classed as motorways, freeways, etc., rather than dual carriageways. A road without a central reservation is a single carriageway regardless of the number of lanes. Dual carriageways have improved road traffic safety over single carriageways and typically have higher speed limits as a result. In some places, express lanes and local/collector lanes are used within a local-express-lane system to provide more capacity and to smooth traffic flows for longer-distance travel. Dual carriageway sign Block Heater A block heater works by warming up the car’s engine and engine fluids, allowing motor oil to circulate through the engine more efficiently. The result is less time spent waiting for the engine to reach optimal working temperatures. Block heaters are made up of two key components—a heating element and a power cord. block heater is used in cold climates to warm an engine prior to starting. They are mostly used for car engines; however, they have also been used in aircraft engines. The most common design of block heater is an electrical heating element embedded in the engine block. Most Common Warning Lights & Symbols There are some warning light symbols that are more common than others. Some are specific to specific car brands, while others will be seen on most car models on the market. We start by showing you the most common symbols that can be seen on most cars. What you should know is that in general when it comes to cars, a red warning light means that there is danger and it should be checked immediately, while a yellow warning light is a warning and should be checked as soon as possible. Normally, most indicators should be on for 3-5 seconds after you turn on the ignition, but if it stays on while the engine is running, there is probably something wrong and needs to be fixed. Check Engine Light A Check Engine light indicates an issue with the engine or the emissions. It can be shown either as an engine symbol or a plain text with “Check Engine”. Anti-lock Braking System An ABS light indicates there is an issue with your brake system or Anti-lock braking system (ABS). Oil Level Warning Light A yellow oil level warning light indicates a low engine oil level. The oil level should be checked as soon as possible. Oil Pressure Warning A red oil pressure warning light indicates low oil pressure in the engine. Your engine should be switched off immediately to avoid damage. Battery Charge Warning A battery symbol indicates that the generator is not charging the battery properly and that your engine is at risk of shutting down due to low battery capacity Coolant Temperature Warning Light An engine temperature warning light indicates that the engine coolant temperature is high, and that the engine should be turned off immediately to avoid further damage. Tire Pressure Warning Light A tire pressure warning symbol indicates low air pressure in one or more tires. It can also be caused by a faulty or uncalibrated tire pressure sensor. Traction Control/ESP Light An ESP or Traction control warning symbol indicates an issue with the traction control system. Your traction control system will not work when the light is on – Danger Low Washer Fluid Light A washer fluid symbol indicates the washer fluid level is low or an incorrect measuring system. Engine & Emission Symbols Glow Plug Indicator (Diesel) A glow plug symbol indicates there is an issue with the glow plugs, or the glow plug control system. Low Fuel Level A low fuel level symbol indicates the fuel tank level is low or there is an issue with the fuel level measuring system. Blinking Engine Light A blinking or flashing engine light indicates there is an issue with your engine ongoing right now. It’s normally triggered by a misfiring engine. Parking Brake Light A parking brake warning light indicates the parking brake is engaged or there is an issue with the parking brake system. Brake Warning Light A brake warning light indicates an issue with the brake system. This should be checked immediately because you may lose your brakes otherwise. Safety Symbols Safety symbols should be taken very seriously. Especially if it’s a red danger light, you are looking at! It can often be a question between life and death if you are unlucky.
