This led to a decrease in protests, a decrease in repression, and an improvement in the economic situation. * **Tory Values (19th century):** * **Caters for the wealthy:** preservation of wealth, power, and privilege * **Monarchist:** Preservation of the monarchy * **Preservation of law and order:** Law and order was maintained through repression. * **Resulting in repression:** * **1820:** Shift from Ultra-Tories to Liberal-Tories because of the economic repression during the Ultra Tory period. This led to protests against poverty and poor living conditions during the Napoleonic Wars * **1815-1819:** At least 7 major protests against poor jobs, and living conditions due to the introduction of new and unpopular corn laws. * **1819:** The Peterloo Massacre - resulted in the government being unable to respond appropriately to protests in a timely manner. The use of horses meant a large disruption of protests and potentially injured civilians.
