Identifying the tone of the source text is highly important for the translator because it should inform the translator's lexical choices and clause/sentence structure in the target text. TONE: EXAMPLES Read the following excerpt from Diary of a Wimpy Kid and identify the tone of the text/author: When I was a newborn, Mom put me in front of the TV for an hour a day to watch educational videos. I don't know if those videos actually made me any smarter, but at least I was smart enough to figure out how to put on something I WANTED to watch. I also figured out how to remove the batteries from the remote so no one could turn the educational videos back ON. The tone of the author/text can be identified as follows: the author's attitude to the reader is intimate and informal; to the subject-matter, the author's attitude is light, humorous and sometimes critical of parenting methods from the child's perspective. TONE: EXAMPLES Read the following excerpt from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and identify the tone of the author/text: During this period I attended an evening school kept by Mr. Wopsle's great aunt. Her method of education was odd, for she usually went to sleep from six to seven every evening, leaving her pupils to improve themselves as best they could by seeing her do it. Mr. Wopsle's great aunt, besides keeping this Educational Institution, kept - in the same room - a little general shop. She had no idea what stock she had, or what the price of anything in it was. The tone of the author is obviously satirical. Dickens blends a critical attitude with humor and wit.
