Aim: How are the life functions described? Do Now: What is the life function that describes an organism’s ability to maintain a stable internal environment? Growth • An increase in size of the organism by increasing cell size and cell number • The materials for growth are from the products of synthesis Growth Excretion • Elimination of cellular waste products from the organism • Include: water, carbon dioxide, salts, and nitrogen compounds • Animals release waste products as urine and sweat • Not the same thing as egestion! Excretion Urine Sample Regulation • Controlling various activities of the organism • All living things respond to changes in their environment. • Living things notice changes in their surroundings and react to them • Examples: plants will grow towards the light (phototropism) Regulation Brain Metabolism • All of the chemical activities a living thing must carry on to sustain life Reproduction • Ability of an organism to form or create more of its own kind • Necessary for the survival of the species, not the individual organism Reproduction Summary • Growth occurs when an organism’s cells increase in size and/or number • Excretion occurs when an organism eliminates waste products • Regulation is when all activities are controlled • Metabolism is all of the chemical activities a living thing must carry on to sustain life • Reproduction is when as organism forms or creates more of its own kind
