**Chapter Four: Rocks** **Lesson 3: Sedimentary Rock** Wind, Water, Ice, Sunlight, and Gravity all cause rock to weather into fragments. Sedimentary Rock Cycle: - Pre-existing rock weathering sediment erosion deposition compaction and cementation Sedimentary rock **Compaction:** the weight from the layers of sediment forces out fluids and decreases the space between grains during a process **Cementation:** minerals dissolved in water crystallize between sediment grains 3 Main categories of Sedimentary Rock: 1. **Clastic rock:** sedimentary rocks that are made up of broken pieces of minerals or rock fragments a. **Clasts:** broken pieces and fragments b. Ex. Conglomerate and breccia 2. **Chemical rock:** sedimentary rocks that forms when minerals crystallize directly from water c. Ex. Halite and gypsum 3. **Biochemical rock:** sedimentary rock that was formed by organisms or contains the remains of organisms d. Fossiliferous limestone are formed from cemented together animal remains e. *Fossils:* the remains or traces of plants and animals that have been preserved in sedimentary rock
