Learning is a process; it is a process in which we acquire a skill or knowledge. In order to learn our brains must absorb, process, comprehend, and retain information. Learning styles are the ways we learn. Each of us tend to have a learning style that we learn best using. • The most popular theory suggests that there are four types of learners or learning styles. • These four learning styles are: 1) 2) 3) 4) visual auditory reading/writing kinesthetic These four are also referred to as V.A.R.K. Researching Styles Groupwork: How can you learn ‘better’? (use internet to compile a list!) What is a VISUAL LEARNER? A visual learner learns more easily when information is presented in a visual manner. • Visual learners are aided by seeing pictures, charts, diagrams, maps, and other visual tools. Visual Learner Characteristics • likes drawing. • has a good memory of faces but not names. • pays attention to detail. • prefers to see directions not hear them. • Likes looking at maps and Charts. These are several of the common characteristics for this learning style . A person may have some of them but doesn’t need to have all of them. Strategies to enhance learning • Sit where you have a clear view of visual tools. • Translates your notes into charts or diagrams. • Use highlighters and markup pages. • When studying use flashcards. • Create PowerPoints. What is an Auditory learner? Auditory learners tends to learn best through listening and speaking. Auditory learner Characteristics Strategies to enhance learning • Learns best through listening and speaking. • Is more likely to remember names then faces. • Enjoys listening to stories and music. • Prefers spoken directions over written directions. • Reads with whispering lips. • Cannot concentrate when it is too noisy. • Read aloud. • Record lectures to listen to later. • Use rhymes to help memorize important information. • Talk through problems • Discuss materials with others. • Orally paraphrase written directions. These are several of the common characteristics for this learning style . A person may have some of them but doesn’t need to have all of them. What is a Reading and Writing learner? Reading and writing learners learn best through words. They learn well by reading or writing the material they want to learn. Reading and Writing learner Characteristics • Learns best through words. • Enjoys reading. • Enjoys writing. • Makes lists and/or writes detailed notes. These are several of the common characteristics for this learning style . A person may have some of them but doesn’t need to have all of them. Strategies to enhance learning • Review and read class notes afterward. • Rewrite ideas in your own words. • Seek resources in articles and books. • Use written statements to analyze information WHAT IS A KINESTHETIC LEARNER? Kinesthetic learner learns best when they can move their body, and/or use their hands and sense of touch. • This type of learner prefers to try things out, touch, feel and handle objects to learn. KINESTHETIC LEARNER Characteristics Strategies to enhance learning • Learns best when they can move their body. • Learns best when they can use their sense of touch. • Prefers to try things out and handle objects. • Likes to actively participate in learning. • Likes to solve problems by doing. • Use movement and the senses of touch. • Practice things by repeating the motions. • Act things out. • Study in short time periods and then walk around. These are several of the common characteristics for this learning style . A person may have some of them but doesn’t need to have all of them. Final Thought It is important to remember that there is no right or wrong learning style; each style has advantages and disadvantages. Knowing your learning style is not meant to limit you, but to help you learn more effectively. We need to be able to use all the different styles to truly be an effective learner. Nonetheless, by learning your learning style, you will become a better learner and be more successful. What about Students with Disabilities? ADA accommodations and are named after the American with Disabilities Act: ● Recordings of class lectures or lecture transcription by in-class note takers ● Text readers or other technologies that can deliver content in another format ● Test or assessment accommodations ● Interpreter services and Braille transcriptions ● Physical access accommodations ● Accommodations of time and due dates Investigate Reflection (3-4 sentences): Now that you know your learning style, think about an assignment you have for class (be specific).
