College Success Sunday, Week 4 How do you spend your time? How do you WANT to spend your time? How far away are you from your ideal day? Let’s be real- how much do you procrastinat e? Once you have identified and scheduled what matters in your day, you need to remove distractions from your field of vision and time spent on low-value tasks. The Nature of What You Have to Do Has Changed Pew Research Center found that 82 percent of teens report that their typical high school writing assignments were only a single paragraph to one page in length. This is in stark contrast to a number of sources that say that writing assignments in lower-level college courses are usually 5–7 pages in length, while writing assignments in upper-level courses increase to 15–20 pages. The amount of writing done by a college student can differ depending on their program of study. We can think of many creative ways to procrastinate, but the outcome is often detrimental. Procrastination: The Enemy Within There are situations where procrastination can become a serious problem with a lot of risk. These include: • when it becomes a chronic habit • when there are a number of tasks to complete and little time • when the task being avoided is very important. The Reasons behind Procrastination There are several reasons we procrastinate: Consider •Lack of Energy •Lack of Focus •Fear of Failure something right now that you may be procrastinating about. Are you able to identify the cause? Table 3.6 Daily Top Three • Determine which 3 things are the most important to finish that day, and these become the tasks that you complete. • Even if you took one day off a week and completed no tasks on that particular day, a daily top three strategy would have you finishing 18 tasks in the course of a single week.
