GROUP 10 ME-301 LESSON 6: MATERIAL TESTING THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS (ASTM) ICE BREAKER GUESS THE FACE OF THE HYBRID ANIMAL ICE BREAKER GUESS THE FACE OF THE HYBRID ANIMAL ICE BREAKER GUESS THE FACE OF THE HYBRID ANIMAL ICE BREAKER GUESS THE FACE OF THE HYBRID ANIMAL ICE BREAKER GUESS THE FACE OF THE HYBRID ANIMAL ICE BREAKER GUESS THE FACE OF THE HYBRID ANIMAL THE OBJECTIVES: 01 To define what material testing is and what ASTM stands for and its history 02 To introduce the importance of ASTM 03 To identify different classes of ASTM standards along with their brief description INTRODUCTION MATERIAL The substances undergoing physical and chemical property testing are known as materials. Metals, polymers, ceramics, composite materials, and raw materials are examples of these materials. TESTING Testing is the process of taking steps to ensure that something is reliable, high quality, or performs as intended, especially before implementing it widely. INTRODUCTION MATERIAL TESTING The physical and mechanical characteristics of raw materials and components, ranging from human hair to steel, composite materials, and ceramics, can be ascertained through the well-established process of materials testing. It measures the properties and actions of materials including metals, ceramics, and polymers under different circumstances. STANDARD IN MATERIAL TESTING Material testing standards specify testing protocols, apparatus, specimen size, characteristics, sample preparation, and methods of result evaluation. WHAT IS ASTM? ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials, is a globally recognized organization that develops and publishes technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services. These standards are essential for ensuring the quality, safety, and performance of construction materials. HISTORY ASTM International, is a global leader in developing voluntary consensus standards for materials, products, systems, and services. Founded in 1898 by chemist Charles Dudley, it originated from research on rail breakage. While ASTM International itself does not enforce its standards, they often become the basis for regulations at various levels of government. ASTM STANDARDS ARE IMPORTANT FOR: Quality assurance: ASTM standards provide a common language and set of requirements for manufacturers, contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders in the construction industry. Consistency: by adhering to ASTM standards, organizations can ensure consistent product quality and performance. Safety: ASTM standards help to identify potential hazards and develop safety measures to protect workers and the public. Legal compliance: many building codes and regulations reference ASTM standards, making compliance with these standards essential for legal and regulatory purposes. DIFFERENT CLASS OF ASTM STANDARDS CLASS A: Iron and Steel Materials Class A items for ASTM include iron and steel materials. This includes different ferrous attributes such as structure, grades, castings, alloys, and testing for steel products. DIFFERENT CLASS OF ASTM STANDARDS CLASS B: Nonferrous Metal Materials Class B includes nonferrous metal materials. This includes many metals that you would see in the periodic table, such as copper, aluminium, gold, and silver. DIFFERENT CLASS OF ASTM STANDARDS Class C: Ceramic, Concrete, and Masonry Materials Class C is for ceramic, concrete, and masonry materials. Glass is also included with the ASTM C designation. DIFFERENT CLASS OF ASTM STANDARDS Class D: Miscellaneous Materials Class D refers to miscellaneous materials, including plastics. ASTM does not seem to have a true classification that is exclusive for plastics, so it falls under the miscellaneous category. Class E: Miscellaneous Subjects Class E involves miscellaneous subjects. This class seems to include the subject of fire, with topics such as Fire Tests for Building Materials (ASTM E119). Class F: Materials for Specific Applications Class F refers to materials for specific applications. Type F can certainly be specific, as once came across a Standard for Structural Design of Thermoplastic Chambers (ASTM F2787). DIFFERENT CLASS OF ASTM STANDARDS Class G: Corrosion, Deterioration, and Degradation of Materials Class G refers to corrosion, deterioration, and degradation of materials. Deterioration and degradation are important facets in the field of materials science since you are studying failure theory and predicting material performance in certain conditions. HOW TO READ AN ASTM STANDARD Example: A328/A328m-13a (2018)- Standard Specification for steel sheet piling. A - signifies a ferrous metal but does not classify as carbon steel, alloy, tool, stainless or cast-iron steel. 328- is a sequential number without any relationships to the metal’s properties. M - Si units (metric) 328/328M, both inch per pound and Si units. 13 – the year of adoption A/B – second or third revision of the standard. (2018) – the year of last re- approval. SOME STANDARDS ARE THE FOLLOWING: ASTM A36 – Standard Specification for Carbon Structural Steel is a widely used standard specification for carbon structural steel. It covers a range of steel products, including plates, shapes, and bars, that are commonly used in construction applications. ASTM B769 – Standard Test Method for Shear Testing of Aluminum Alloys it outlines the procedure for determining the shear ultimate strength of wrought and cast aluminum products through double-shear testing. This standard is crucial for evaluating the shear resistance of aluminum alloys used in structural components. ASTM C67 – Standard Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Brick and Structural Clay Tile covers procedures for sampling and testing brick and structural clay tile. It outlines various test methods to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of these materials, ensuring their suitability for construction purposes. SOME STANDARDS ARE THE FOLLOWING: ASTM D638 – Standard Test Method for Tensile Properties of Plastics is a comprehensive standard that provides a systematic approach to determining the tensile properties of plastics. This analysis is essential for understanding the mechanical performance, durability, and suitability of plastic materials in various applications. ASTM E119 – Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials The test methods described in this fire-test-response standard are applicable to assemblies of masonry units and to composite assemblies of structural materials for buildings, including loadbearing and other walls and partitions, columns, girders, beams, slabs, and composite slab and beam assemblies for floors and roofs. SOME STANDARDS ARE THE FOLLOWING: ASTM F2787 – Standard for Structural Design of Thermoplastic Chambers This practice standardizes structural design of thermo-plastic corrugated wall arch-shaped chambers used for collec-tion, detention, and retention of stormwater runoff. The prac-tice is for chambers installed in a trench or bed and subjectedto earth and live loads. ASTM G51 – Standard Test Method for Measuring pH of Soil for Use in Corrosion Testing This test method covers a procedure for determining the pH of a soil in corrosion testing. The principle use of the test is to supplement soil resistivity measurements and thereby identify conditions under which the corrosion of metals in soil may be accentuated. THANK YOU
