Nomination - A speaker carries out a nomination to collaboratively and productively establish a topic. When you employ this strategy, you try to open a topic with the people you are talking to. Example: Have you noticed the weird weather lately? Is this because of global warming? 1. Nomination Example: ❖ “What is your name?” ❖ “Hey, how are you? I missed you.” ❖ “Good morning, class. How’s your day? Raise your left hand if the strategy is restriction and shake your hand if not. “Is it “My talk will “Do you raining in focus on the love your effects of chocolates area?” cigarettes?” ? (Yes/NO)” NOMINATION RESTRICTION RESTRICTION 2. Restriction - it refers to any limitations that you have as a speaker. Example: “We will have 30 minutes of online discussion regarding the topic on Drug Prevention. An additional 10 minutes will be allotted for your questions and related concerns.” 2. Restriction Example: ❖ “Your goal in this debate is to argue your stand as to whether or not the country will benefit from a constitutional change. Please express your ideas only when it is your turn to speak.” ❖ “I am willing to share with you what happened between us, but please do not ask questions that will only trigger my emotions. I am trying to move on from the hurtful feelings that I felt from our past misunderstanding.” State YOURS if the strategy is turn- taking and MINE up if not. “May I give “The arrest “No. You the floor to move was first.” Ana.” disaster waiting to happen. Do you agree? (Yes/ No)” TURN-TAKING RESTRICTION TURN-TAKING 3. Turn-taking - pertains to the order by which people engage in a conversation speak. Example: “I agree with the point just made. But may I add that OFW's would rather be home and work here so they could be with their families.” 3. Turn-taking Example: ❖ “Yes, I agree.” ❖ “No, you go ahead.” ❖ “It’s fine. You speak, first.” ❖ “Okay. Well, you have a point, but for me…” State YES if the strategy is control and NO up if not. “John. Do “Now is the Make sure will you want to right time to write only the say talk about assigned to something?” that…” you.” TURN-TAKING TOPIC CONTROL TOPIC CONTROL 4. Topic control Example: ❖ “This is not the right time to talk about that…” ❖ “Perhaps that is an issue for another discussion …” ❖ “This might not be the best venue for such discussion …” State GO if the strategy is topic shifting and STAY up if not. “I know this “I wish I “This time, I off-topic, but could stay will talk about I have to ask more, but I the effects of if it will not have to go.” climate affect our change.” grades.” TERMINATION TOPIC SHIFTING TOPIC SHIFTING 5. Topic shifting ❖ involves moving from one topic to another. In other words, it is where one part of a conversation ends and where another begins. Example: ❖ “Before I forget…” ❖ “By the way …” 5. Topic shifting Example: ❖ “Perhaps, we can save that discussion for another forum …” ❖ “Maybe we can continue that discussion some other time. In the meantime, let’s talk about …” ❖ “Allow me to take a moment to …” ❖ “At this point, I’d like to mention/say …” Stand up if the strategy is repair and hop if not. “That came “Do you “Let me out wrong… have clarify that it Let me anything to worsen our rephrase say?” mother earth. that…” REPAIR TURN-TAKING REPAIR 6. Repair 6. Repair is the process of identifying your mistakes and finding simpler or better words to use so your listeners can understand you. Example: “I think British Education... The characteristics of the British educational system is that...” 6. Repair Example: ❖ “That came out wrong…” ❖ “Excuse me. Let me repeat that…” ❖ “ I apologize for the mistakes.” ❖ “Let me rephrase that…” Say BYE if the strategy is termination and WAIT if not. “It’s been “It’s already “I’m sorry, I grate talking time. Let’s take that to you, but talk later.” back...” I’m afraid I have to go.” TERMINATION TERMINATION REPAIR 7. Termination - refers to the conversation participants’ close-initiating expressions that end a topic in conversation. Most of the time, the topic initiator takes responsibility to signal the end of the discussion as well. 7. Termination Example: P1: So that's it for our plans in the upcoming Student Council elections. P2: Yes P3: Okay, all done. P4: Finished. P1: See you in the class. P2, P3, P4: See you later. 7. Termination Example: ❖ “I wish I could stay and talk more, but I need to go.” ❖ “Let’s talk this over another time.” ❖ “Never mind, it doesn’t matter.
