Summary
This lesson covers cell modification, specifically apical, lateral, and basal modifications. It details the functions of structures like pseudopods, cilia, flagella, villi, and microvilli. The lesson also discusses the extracellular matrix and different types of junctions (gap, tight, adhering).

GOOD DAY! WELCOME TO OUR GEN BIO 1 CLASS! WEEK 1, DAY 3-4 MOTIVATION Picture Analysis! What did you observe from the photos? Picture Analysis! Direction: Analyze the picture and share some insights about it. CELL MODIFICATION: APICAL, LATERAL AND BASAL WEEK 1, DAY 3-4 Learning Objectives a. define what is cell modification, b. cite the importance of studying cell modification; and, c. locate the structure of the cell where cell modification takes place. Cell Modification Cell Modification is a process that occurs after cell division where the newly formed cells that are structurally modified so that they can perform their function efficiently and effectively. Cell Modification APICAL MODIFICATION LATERAL MODIFICATION BASAL MODIFICATION APICAL MODIFICATION found on the apical surface of the cell. Example: a. PSEUDOPODS b. CILIA AND FLAGELLA c. VILLI AND MICROVILLI d. EXTRA-CELLULAR MATRIX (ECM) a. PSEUDOPODS irregular lobes by amoebas and some other eukaryotic cells. Bulge outward to move the cell in order to engulf energy b. CILIA AND FLAGELLA b. CILIA AND FLAGELLA Cilia is a short-hair like structure that move in waves. Flagella is a long-whip like structures formed from microtubules. c. VILLI AND MICROVILLI c. VILLI AND MICROVILLI Villi is a finger like projections that arise from the epithelial layer in some organs. Help to increase surface area for faster and more efficient absorption. Microvilli are smaller projections with some functions. d. EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX d. EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX A compound secreted by the cell on its apical surface. Cell wall is the extra cellular structure in plant cells that distinguishes them from animal cells. Glycoprotein (glucose and protein) is the main ingredient of ECM in animal cells. LATERAL MODIFICATION found on the basal surface of the cell. Example: GAP JUNCTION TIGHT JUNCTION ADHERING JUNCTION a. GAP JUNCTION GAP JUNCTION (communicating junction) - connect the cytoplasm of adjoining animal cells b. TIGHT JUNCTION acts as a barrier that regulates the movement of water and solutes between epithelial layers. It prevents leakage of ECM c. ADHERING JUNCTION ADHERING JUNCTION - anchors junction on the lateral surface of the cell. BASAL MODIFICATION a. DESMOSOMES/HEMIDESMOSOME - The anchoring junction of the basal surface of the cell. Primarily composed of keratin, integrins and cadherins.
