SOFTWARES and APPLICATIONS ACTIVITY 1: GUESS THE ICON/LOGO SOFTWARE is a set of programs, procedures and routines that tells the computer what to do. It is the opposite of hardware, which describes the physical aspects of a computer. software is a generic term used to refer to applications, scripts and programs that run on a device. PROGRAMMERS Develop software using programming languages. They produce source codes then it will be translated by a compiler into a machine language that the computer understand and acts on. WHAT ARE THE 2 TYPES OF SOFTWARE? First is the system software that controls a computer’s internal function. Second is the application software that directs the computer to execute commands that solve practical problems. Sometimes, there’s included a third type which is network software that coordinates communication between computers linked in a network. Network software is defined as a wide range of software that streamlines the operations, design, monitoring, and implementation of computer networks. SYSTEM SOFTWARE is computer software designed to operate the computer hardware and to provide a maintain platform for running application software. we have: Firmware (BIOS old version and UEFI new version) Operating System Utility Software BIOS stands for 'basic input/output system'. It is system firmware stored on a chip on your motherboard and comes pre-installed. It is the program that computer's microprocessor uses to start the computer system after it is powered on. It also manages data flow between the computer's operating system (OS) and attached devices, such as the hard disk, video adapter, keyboard, mouse and printer. UEFI VS BIOS UEFI The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface replaces the legacy Basic Input/Output System boot firmware originally present in all IBM PC-compatible personal computers. UEFI can support remote diagnostics and repair of computers, even with no operating system installed. UEFI VS BIOS What is UEFI, and how is it different from the BIOS we’re all familiar with? Both UEFI and BIOS are low-level software that starts when you boot your PC before booting your operating system, but UEFI is a more modern solution, supporting larger hard drives, faster boot times, more security features, and—conveniently—graphics and mouse cursors. WHAT IS OPERATING SYSTEM? Is a system software commonly simplified as “OS”. It is the most important software that runs on a computer. It manages the computer’s memory, processes, and all its software and hardware. It also allows you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the computer’s “languages”. Without an operating system a computer is useless. TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM? OS usually come preloaded on any computer that you buy. Most people use the OS that comes with their computer. But it is possible to upgrade or even change OS. The 3 most common OS for personal computers are: Microsoft Windows, Apple MAC OS X and Linux. while in mobile/tablet pc: Google Android, Apple iOS and Windows Phone WHAT IS UTILITY SOFTWARE? designed to help analyze, configure, optimize or maintain a computer. It is used to support the computer infrastructure - in contrast to application software, which is aimed at directly performing tasks that benefit ordinary users. Some examples are: antivirus software, file management tools, compression tools, disk management tools, etc. APPLICATION SOFTWARE is a computer program designed to carry out a specific task other than one relating to the operation of the computer itself, typically to be used by end-users. Most common app that we have: Word processing software Spreedsheet software Database software Deskstop Publishing software Presentation Software Office suite software WORD-PROCESSING SOFTWARE If the pen is mightier than the sword, the word processor is even better. Word processors create text- based documents. This set of software tools are most flexible and widely used. Word processors are used for creating memos, faxes and letters. Word processors are also used to create reports and personalized pages on the Web. SPREEDSHEET SOFTWARE Spreadsheets organize, analyze and us for chart and graph for numerical data such as financial reports and budgets. This program is responsible for manipulating data and creating workbook files comprising one/more related worksheets. It involves ranges, text and numeric entries, functions, formulas, calculations and what-if analysis. DATABASE SOFTWARE is used to create, edit, and maintain database files and records, enabling easier file and record creation, data entry, data editing, updating, and reporting. The software also handles data storage, backup and reporting, multi-access control, and security. DESKTOP PUBLISHING SOFTWARE software that supplements sophisticated visual features than word processing softwraethat also stem from graphic software. It can be used to create the layout for a wide range of different publications, such as: newspapers and magazines. brochures, posters, flyer, leaflets and catalogues. books and e-books. PRESENTATION SOFTWARE software is defined as computer programs designed to allow the user to present information in an engaging way such as with text, pictures, sound and video. It organize a slide show for an audience and may provide space for notes to be written. OFFICE SUITE SOFTWARE an office suite is a collection of productivity software usually containing at least a word processor, spreadsheet and a presentation program. There are many different brands and types of office suites. HOW DO THEY ALL WORK?
