Hydrocarbons 1 Chemistry: Carbon in Different Forms Lesson 1: Carbon in Different Forms Lesson 2: Hydrocarbons 1 Lesson 3: Hydrocarbons 2 Lesson 4: Alcohols, Carboxylic Acids, (Esters) Lesson 5: Fossil Fuels Lesson 6: The Carbon Cycle Lesson 7: Alternatives to Fossil Fuels Lesson 8: Review Lesson 9: Test Learning Goals Define a hydrocarbon. Understand the difference between molecular models, structural formulas, and molecular formulas. Name the first 6 hydrocarbons in the alkane, alkene, and alkyne series. Understand the difference between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. Recap- Allotropes of Carbon What is an allotrope? Recap- Allotropes of Carbon List at least 3 allotropes of carbon. Recap- Covalent Bonding How many covalent bonds can carbon form? Recap- Covalent Bonding How many covalent bonds can hydrogen form? Hydrocarbons Hydrocarbons are the simplest organic compounds. They are made up of only carbon and hydrogen atoms. Hydrocarbons There are different ways to represent hydrocarbons: Structural formula Molecular formula Molecular model Molecular Model We can use models to represent hydrocarbons. Each sphere represents an atom: Black = carbon Red = oxygen White = hydrogen Each stick represents one covalent bond. Molymod Rules You only use the molymods when I tell you to. You only build what I tell you to. You do not exchange materials (spheres or sticks) with any other boxes. You organize your box at the end to look just like it did at the start. Each carbon needs 4 bonds and each hydrogen needs 1 bond. Molecular Model Use the molymods to make a molecule with 1 carbon and 4 hydrogen atoms. Structural and Molecular Formula Write the structural and molecular formula for the molecule you made in your worksheet. Molecular Model Use the molymods to make a molecule with 4 carbon and 10 hydrogen atoms. Structural and Molecular Formula Write the structural and molecular formula for the molecule you made in your worksheet. Molecular Model Find 3 different ways to build a molecule with 2 carbons. Remember: each carbon must have 4 covalent bonds, and each hydrogen must have 2 covalent bond. Molecular Model Ethane, ethene, ethyne Hydrocarbons There are 3 types of hydrocarbons. Alkanes- only have single bonds between carbon atoms. Alkenes- have at least one double bond between carbon atoms. Alkynes- have at least one triple bond between carbon atoms. Naming Hydrocarbons The names of hydrocarbons are made up of 2 parts: a prefix and a suffix. The prefix tells us how many carbon atoms there are. The suffix tells us the type of hydrocarbon. Naming Hydrocarbons The prefix tells us how many carbons we have: Prefix Number of Carbon Atoms Meth 1 Eth 2 Prop 3 But 4 Pent 5 Hex 6 Naming Hydrocarbons My Enormous Penguin Bounces Pretty High Min Elaka Pappa Brukar Panta Häxor Naming Hydrocarbons The suffix tells us the type of hydrocarbon: Suffix Type of Hydrocarbon ane Alkane ene Alkene yne Alkyne Naming Hydrocarbons Write the names of the molecules you made with your molymods in your worksheet. Naming Hydrocarbons A hydrocarbon is named hexane. A: How many carbons does it have? B: Is it an alkane, alkene, or alkyne? Naming Hydrocarbons What is the name of this hydrocarbon? Naming Hydrocarbons What is the name of this hydrocarbon? Naming Hydrocarbons What is the name of this hydrocarbon? Hydrocarbons In your worksheet, write the structural formula, molecular formula, and name of the following molecules. Saturated and Unsaturated Hydrocarbons Saturated hydrocarbons are hydrocarbons that only have single bonds between carbon atoms. Unsaturated hydrocarbons are hydrocarbons that have double or triple bonds between carbon atoms. Saturated Unsaturated hydrocarbon hydrocarbon Learning Goals Define a hydrocarbon. Understand the difference between molecular models, structural formulas, and molecular formulas. Name the first 6 hydrocarbons in the alkane, alkene, and alkyne series. Understand the difference between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons.
