# AIRPORT ## DR. ROSE Y. BREW ## Lesson Objectives - General overview of airports - Types of airports - Roles and functions of airports - How airports generate revenue - Summary - Q&A ## Airports Airports are the point of interaction of major components of the air transportation system, namely: - Air Traffic Control - Airport Operator - Concessionaires - business that has been give the right to sell something on property owed by the airport - Airlines - Passengers/Cargo - Authorities (Customs, Border Police, Security, port health...) - Ground Services Providers (GSP) ## Airport Components - Airside - Landside - Terminal A diagram of an airport layout shows the following components: - Parking - Vehicle Driveway - Terminal Building - Apron/Gate - Taxiway System - Runway ## Airside - The restricted side of the airport - Infrastructure: Runway, Taxiway, Apron/Ramp - Aircraft Parking areas, Navigation Aids, Markings, Signage and Lighting System, ATC Tower - Airside activities: Aircraft Movement, Ground Handling, Fueling, Pax and Bag Handling, Cargo Handling, Airport maintenance & construction - Taxi lane on the apron to direct the pilot to the parking gate, NG chocking ## Types of Airports - Airstrip - Water aerodrome - Air base - Heliport - Domestic airport - International airport ##Types of Airports - An airstrip is a small aerodrome that consists only of a runway, generally located in remote location such as on farms, rural towns, game parks. Mostly used by light private aircrafts and military aircrafts. - Water aerodrome these are also known as seaplane base. This is an area of open water used regularly by seaplanes, floatplanes and amphibious aircraft for landing and taking off, commonly found in Columbia, Indonesia, Canada, around the great oceans and sea of the earth. ## Heliport / Vertiports - Heliport or helidrome is a small airport suitable for use by helicopters for landing and taking off. Police departments use heliports a base for police helicopters. - Vertiports - hubs for VTOLs such as air taxis and drones. These are recent developing projects in aviation. The future of air travel. ## Airbase - Sometimes referred to as military air base, military airfield, air force base or military airport. - This is an aerodrome used as a military base by a military force for the operation of military aircraft. ## Domestic and International Airport - Domestic airport is an airport that handles only domestic flights - these are flights within the same country, for example: CPT-JNB, NDL-LUN, LUN-LVI - Here the difference they don't have border customs and immigration facilities but some airports are built with both terminal buildings for domestics passengers and international passenger e.g. Kenneth Kaunda Inter Airport - International airport has additional facilities for border control, police department, customs and migration control as well as incorporating all the aforementioned airport facilities such as the ramp, terminal building, control tower, hangers, banks, facilities that accommodates heavier and large aircrafts, etc. - This airport enables passengers to travel between countries. Gate way to the global world. Gate way to possibilities. ## General purpose for airports - Getaway to possibilities, boarder post - Provision of essential operation services such as air traffic control system within the country's airspace, Fire and rescue services, Hangers for aircraft maintenance works, Aviation security services. Etc. - Business opportunity for ground handling services providers(GSP), processing of passengers and cargo in and out the country though airlines services. Huge business. - Air Cargo handling services which is at a constant massive growth every year, cargo warehouse facilities, customs cargo clearing and forwarding, imports and exports - Tourism industry - the growth of tourism industry depends on the airports facilities, tourists attraction demands better facilities better airport facilities. - Commercial activities which include duty free shops, restaurants, bars, car-hire services, offices for airlines and travel agents, banks, FOREX exchange facilities and other customer services. - Government agencies like customs, police, migration department, wild life authority, port health care services etc. **Key Note:** The functions and roles of different airports depend on the number of aircraft movements, number of passengers and volume of cargo. ## International memberships of Airport - Airport Council International (ACI) - they develop policies, programs, and best practices, standards of airport operations - Airport Handling Manual (AHM) has everything on passenger, baggage, cargo/mail handling, Aircraft handling and load control, Aircraft movement control, Ground handling agreement. - International Civil Aviation Organization - ICAO -Member state- Local CAA Implements international civil aviation standards, a regulator of the aviation sector. - International Air Transport Association (IATA) Ground Handling Council – IATA GHC Sets priorities for improving safety and reducing aircraft damage in ground operations - Civil Air Navigation Services Organization – CANSO - is the global voice of the air traffic management industry for a safe, secure, efficient and seamless airspace. Developing an international network for air navigation services. ## How airports generate Revenue ### Aeronautical - Air navigation services - overflights - Airport facilitation services – aircraft movements - Airline Landing fees - Aircraft parking and gate usage - Ground handling services - Cargo handling - Passengers processing- checking pax at counters domestic and international – paying passengers - Security and safety - Modern retail space - Rentals from hangars, offices, maintenance facilities ### Non-aeronautical - Commercializing airport infrastructure – hotel, shopping mall - Car parks - Advertising - Office building - Car rentals, airport shuttle bus - Restaurants and bars ## Summary - Airports function as a series of interconnected facilities and services and all players work in unison toward a common goal. - Airport components - International airport memberships - Types of airports - General purpose for airports - How airports generate revenue ## Questions and Contributions "Anyone anywhere in the world I guess, can step up to the plate and take responsibility drive change, push excellence and show leadership" - Happy Flight Aviators. # AIRPORT SERVICES & FACILITIES ## What is and AIRPORT? - A public facility where aircrafts can take off and land. - Consists of runways. - Usually owned and/or operated by the national government. - Private airports - CHANGI ## AIRPORT STRUCTURES ### AIRSIDE AREAS: - Runways - Taxiways - Ramps / apron ### LAND SIDE - Public transport stations - Access roads - Parking lots - A taxiway is a path on an airport connecting runways with ramps, hangars, terminals and other facilities. - A runway (RWY) is a strip of land of an airport, on which aircraft can take off and land. - Apron and ramps - A hangar is an enclosed structure designed to hold aircraft in protective storage. An image shows the following: - a hangar - an apron ## TYPES OF AIRPORTS - Towered - Non-Towered The TOWER controls the air traffic and monitors the departure / arrival of aircrafts. - Air traffic control (ATC) is a service provided by ground-based controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and in the air. ## IMMIGRATION - Responsible for the ADMISSION and REMOVAL of travelers entering the country. ## AIRPORT CUSTOMS - An authority or agency responsible for the collection of duties & for controlling the flow of people, animals & goods in and out of the country. ## PRE-SECURITY ZONES - Check-In Counters - Retail Stores and Restaurants ## POST SECURITY ZONES - Duty Free Shops - Airport Lounges - Baggage Claim ## PASSENGER FACILITIES - Banks, Money Changers, & ATMs - Baggage Handling Services (Portage) - Public Telephone Booths - Medical Clinics - Postal Services - Special Assistance Services - Tourist Information - Ground Transportation Services
