MUSIC OF THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD MUSIC OF THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD What comes first to your mind when you hear the word Medieval Period? MEDIEVAL PERIOD - In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages or medieval period lasted approximately from the 5th to the late 15th centuries. MEDIEVAL PERIOD - It also known as the Middle Ages – Dark Ages that started with the fall of the Roman Empire. During this time, the Christian Church influenced Europe’s culture and political affairs. What are the kinds of music emerged during Medieval period? GREGORIAN CHANT - It is the main practice of Western plainchant. GREGORIAN CHANT - It is a form of monophonic, sacred song without accompaniment of the Western Roman Catholic Church. GREGORIAN CHANT - Stories credit Pope St. Gregory the Great for introducing Gregorian chant, however, scholars say that is was created from a later Carolingian synthesis of Gallican chant and Roman chant. GREGORIAN CHANT - It was formed initially into four, then eight, and finally twelve modes. The chants can be sung using six-note patterns called hexachords. GREGORIAN CHANT - Gregorian melodies are traditionally written using neumes – an early form of musical notation from which modern four-line and five-line staff developed. GREGORIAN CHANT - Multi-voice elaborations of Gregorian chant, known as organum, were an early stage in the development of Western polyphony. LITURGICAL DRAMA - It shows Roman drama with Christian stories such as the Gospel, the Passion, and the lives of the saints-grafted on. LITURGICAL DRAMA - It was believed to be performed by traveling actors and musicians. GOLIARDS - They were traveling poet- musicians of Europe from 10 th to mid 13th century. GOLIARDS - Their poetry is mostly secular, although some of the songs celebrate religious ideas. TROUBADOUR MUSIC - It refers to man since it sounds masculine, and female troubadours are referred to as trobairitz. TROUBADOUR MUSIC - Themes of troubadour songs are centered on chivalry and courtly love. TROUBADOUR MUSIC - Their songs can be classified into three styles. 1. Trobar clus - close 2. Trobar leu - light 3. Trobar ric - rich LATE MEDIEVAL MUSIC - Ars Nova which means new art, was coined by Philippe de Vitry to distinguish practice from music of the immediately preceding age. LATE MEDIEVAL MUSIC - During the Ars nova era, secular music acquired a polyphonic sophistication formerly found only in sacred music. LATE MEDIEVAL MUSIC - The end of the Medieval musical era is marked by Ars subtilior – a highly methodical style. LATE MEDIEVAL MUSIC - Ars subtilior attempted to combine French and Italian styles.
