Basic Filipino Values Arnold Duping Good citizenship stimulates a love of the country that influences the development of the nation. Through good citizenship, the young, the old, and even the poor individual can contribute to nation-building. Good citizenship strengthens unity, we must share our values for us to be united despite our differences. What are values? Valare- be strong and vigorous. Define as the fundamental beliefs that guides our action. Filipino values are social constructs within Filipino culture which define that which is socially considered to be desirable. The Filipino value system describes "the commonly shared and traditionally established system of values underlying Filipino behavior" within the context of the larger Filipino cultural system. These relate to the unique assemblage of consistent ideologies, moral codes, ethical practices, etiquette and personal and cultural values that are promoted by Filipino society. Four Corners Arnold Duping Four Corners Statements 1. All people should have the right to own guns for self defense. 2. Violent video games should be banned. 3. People that choose to smoke, drink, do drugs, do not exercise should have to pay more taxes for healthcare or insurance. 4. Freedom of individual is more important than the needs of the larger society. 5. It is fair for everyone to pay more taxes if it means more investments in public schools, government housing, and other resources. 6. Every citizen should be mandated to render community service. Four Corners Statements 1. What did you learn about yourself? And others? 2. Was it hard to express disagreements with other people values? Why or why not? 3. Where there any times you felt unable to stand for your values? Why do you think it was so? 4. What would support people at times when they feel unable to stand up for a value they believe in? BASIC FILIPINO VALUES Arnold Duping Preamble of the Philippine Constitution We, the sovereign Filipino people, implore the aid of Almighty God, in order to build a just and humane society and establish a Government that shall embody our ideals and aspirations, promote the common good, conserve and develop our patrimony, and secure to ourselves and our posterity the blessings of independence and democracy under the rule of law and a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace, do ordain and promulgate this Constitution. Four Fold Base of Filipino Values First, although humankind shares universal human values, it is obvious that certain values take on for us a distinctively Filipino flavor. The Greek ideal of moderation or “meden agan”, the Roman in “medio stat virtus”, the Confucian and Buddhist “doctrine of the Middle”, find their Filipino equivalent in “hindi labis, hindi kulang, katamtaman lamang.” Four-Fold Base of Filipino Values Second, when we speak of Filipino values, we do not mean that elements of these Filipino values are absent in the value systems of other peoples and cultures. All people eat, talk and sing, but they eat different foods, speak various languages, and sing different songs. The difference lies in the way these elements are ranked, combined or emphasized so that they take on distinctively Filipino slant or cast. Four-Fold Base of Filipino Values Thirdly, universal human values in a Filipino context: historical, cultural, socio-economic, political, moral and religious, take on a distinctive set of Filipino meanings and motivations. This is true not only of the aims and goals, beliefs, convictions, and social principles of the traditional value system of the lowland rural family but also calls the Filipino“nationalistic” tradition of: “pagsasarili”, “pagkakaisa”, “pakikisama”, “pakikipag kapwa-tao” and “pagkabayani.” Four-Fold Base of Filipino Values A Filipino value or disvalue does not exist alone, in isolation or in vacuum. Filipino values like “bahala na”, “utang na loob”, “hiya”, “pakikisama”, “paki-usap”, are clustered around core values, like social acceptance, economic security, social mobility, and are always found in a definite context or set of circumstances. Four-Fold Base of Filipino Values Fourth, we can speak of Filipino values in the sense that the historical consciousness of values has evolved among our people. The Filipino concept of justice has evolved from inequality to equality and to human dignity; from the tribe to the family and to the nation. Filipino consciousness of these different values varies at different periods of our history. Four-Fold Base of Filipino Values It is only in the last two decades that the Filipino people have become more conscious of overpopulation and family planning, environmental pollution (Kawasaki sintering plant) and wildlife conservation, and the violation of human rights (Martial Law), active non-violence and People Power (1986 non-violent Revolution).
