21ST CENTURY LITERATURE Week 2 LEARNING OUTCOMES identify 21st century literary content from the Philippines and the world; differentiate/compare and contrast the various 21st century literary genres and the ones from the earlier genres/periods citing their elements, structures and traditions; and demonstrate appreciation on how literature presents culture and period/ age. WHAT IS LITERATURE? Etymologically, the term is derived from the Latin word litaritura/litteratura which means “writing formed with letters,” Although, some definitions include spoken or sung texts (Lumen Learning, n.d.). WHAT IS LITERATURE? According to Encyclopedia Britannica, literature is a body of written works. The name has traditionally been applied to those imaginative works of poetry and prose distinguished by the intentions of their authors and the perceived aesthetic excellence of their execution. Literature may be classified according to a variety of systems, including language, national origin, historical period, genre, and subject matter. WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE LITERATURE? WHY 21ST CENTURY LITERATURE? Simply because SHS students were all born in or just before the 21st century. This century is their century. For them, the 20th century is what the 19th century is to us teachers. -Isagani Cruz, Philippine Star WHY 21ST CENTURY LITERATURE? “On or about December 1910 human character changed, something major happened to literature on or about December 2000.” - Virginia Woolf CHARACTERISTICS OF LITERATURE It stands the test of time It has a universal appeal (no boundaries of time, gender, space, culture, creed, religion) It offers insights into human nature and experiences It offers relief from pent-up emotions (catharsis) It involves a conscious effort on the part of the writer to choose his words discriminately in order to make his work creative and imaginative. 21ST CENTURY LITERATURE New literary works created within the last decade Imaginative writing Deals with current themes and reflects technological culture Often breaks traditional writing Traces artistic representation of shared and familiar experiences 21ST CENTURY READERS AND WRITERS NEED TO: develop proficiency with the tools of technology build relationships with others to pose and solve problems collaboratively and cross-culturally design and share information for global communities to meet a variety of purposes manage, analyze, and synthesize multiple streams of simultaneous information create, critique, analyze, and evaluate multi- media texts CONTENTS OF LITERATURE ILLUSTRATED NOVEL Story through text and illustrated images. 50 % of the narrative is presented without words. The reader must interpret the images in order to comprehend completely the story. Textual portions are presented in traditional form. Some illustrated novels may contain no text at all. Span all genres. DIGI-FICTION Triple Media Literature Combines three media: book, movie/video, and internet website. In order to get the full story, students must engage in navigation, reading, viewing, in all three formats. GRAPHIC NOVELS Narratives in comic-book formats Narrative work in which the story is conveyed to the reader using comic form The term is employed in a broad manner, encompassing non=fiction works and thematically linked short stories as well as fictional stories acrossa number of genres MANGA Japanese word for “comics” It is used in the English-speaking world as a generic term for all comic booksand graphics novels originally published in Japan. Considered as an artistic and storytelling style. Ameri-manga – sometimes used to refer to comics created by American artists in manga style. MANGA –Shonen - Boy’s Manga (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece) –Shojo – Girl’s Manga (Sailor Moon) –Seinen – Men’s Manga –Josei – Women’s Manga (Loveless, Paradise Kiss) –Kodomo – Children’s Manga (Doraemon, Hello Kitty) DOODLE FICTION Literary presentation where the author incorporates doodle writing and drawings, and handwritten graphics in place of traditional font. Drawing enhance the story, often adding humorous elements that would be missing if the illustrations were omitted. TEXT-TALK Novel A literary work originally written on a cellular phone via text messaging. This type of literature originated in Japan, where it has become a popular literary genre. TEXT-TALK Novel It is typically sent directly to the reader via email, SMS text message, or subscription through an online writing and sharing website, chapter by chapter. Cliffhangers are common. Novels are not written in SMS slang. Per chapter, there is only 70- 100 words. The sentences are short and simple. CHICK LIT Is genre fiction which addresses issues of modern womanhood, often humorously and lightheartedly. Chick it typically features a female protagonist whose womanhood is heavily thermalized in the plot. FLASH FICTION Is a style of fictional literature of extreme brevity. There is no widely accepted definition of the length of the category. It could range from word to a thousand. SCIENCE Fiction Is a genre of speculative fiction dealing with imaginative concepts such as futuristic science and technology, space travel, time travel, faster than light travel, parallel universe and extraterrestrial life. Often explores the potential consequences of scientific and other innovations and has been called a “literature of Ideas”. BLOG A web log ; a website containing short articles called posts that are changed regularly. Some blogs are written by one person containing their own opinions, interests and experiences, while others are written by many different people. CREATIVE NON-FICTION Also known as literary non-fiction or narrative non- fiction A genre of writing that uses literary styles and techniques to create factually accurate narratives. HYPER POETRY Refers to works of verse (although not necessarily in lines and stanzas) which could not be presented without the computer. It includes verse with links to sub-poems or footnotes, poetry “generators,” poetry with movement or images. Some examples of spoken word you might be familiar with are stories, poems, monologues, slam poetry, rap and even stand-up comedy.
