TYPES OF SPORTS TYPES OF SPORTS Individual sports - are played by one participant on each competing side. Dual Sports – are played by two competing pairs. Team Sports – are played BENEFITS OF PLAYING SPORTS Chance at sports scholarships Develop emotional traits and encourage goal setting Develop mental and improves academic performance Health and Fitness benefits Less risk of cigarette, drug, and alcohol use Pleasure Professional growth Profit Socialization STYLES OF PLAYING SPORTS Technical Skills - these are basic/ fundamental skills needed to play the game. Tactical Skills - these are decision – making skills or strategies used in different situations during the game. These may vary depending on the trainer, or coach, skill level of an athlete, or strength and weakness of the CLASSIFICATIO N OF SPORTS Athletics: Running, Jumping, and Throwing Events Ball (Games) Sports: Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, etc. Dancesport: Standard and Latin Dance Sports Extreme Sports: BMX, UFC, Motorcross, etc. Gymnastics: Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics Martial Arts: Taekwondo, Karatedo, Judo, etc. Mind Sports: Chess, Frisbee Shooting and Target Sports: Archery, Darts, Riffle / Gun shooting Water Sports: Swimming, Water Polo, Synchronized Swimming Weights Sports: Weightlifting Winter Sports: Figure Skating, Skiing, Snow Boarding, etc. CLASSIFICATION OF SPORTS ACCORDING TO LEVEL AMATEUR Pertains to a sports in which players engage without payments of service. They train and compete in their leisure time, usually after school, work or at weekends. Ex: NCAA, UAAP, National Games, SEA Games PROFESSIONAL A popular profitable type of sport elevated as an entertainment. It is a paid form of participation in sport events. Ex: NBA Players, Manny Pacquiao (Boxing) and Tiger Woods (Golf) SPORTS TERMINOLOGI ES Athletes - The players in sports. Coach - The formal authority within a team. Competition - The competitive sport or tournament. Court - The physical facility/venue where sports are played. Equipment - Usually heavy and well-built materials used in a sport. Game - It pertains to recreational activities that are not considered as a sport (Example: card games, internet games, etc.). Leisure - The available time used from work, obligations, and responsibilities. Match - An entire game characterized by number, time, and order. Official - The person or group of individuals who have the full jurisdiction over the game. Play - The act of playing. Likewise, it is an amusement engaged for fun that is non-utilitarian that the outcome is unpredictable and has an end in itself Riot (Hooliganism) - Denotes violence in sports. It is an increase of negative attitude in a sport. Set - The partition of a match. Sportsmanship - An attitude that strives for fair play, courtesy toward teammates and opponents, ethical behavior and integrity, and grace in victory or defeat (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Team Captain - The leader or the player that is in-charge of his/her co- team members. Trainer - The instructor that teaches drills and skills.
