GENDER AND SOCIETY SEX, GENDER AND SEXUALITY SEX- BIOLOGICAL DIMENSION OF GENDER AND SEXUALITY - Pertains to your identity depending on your sexual anatomy. - Typically determined by examining your genitals – external organs that are associated with reproduction- the process or ability to create offspring. SEX CATEGORIES MALE- at birth, if a child is observed to have a penis and testicles. FEMALE- when the child is observed to have a vagina. INTERSEXUALITY- when the baby’s genitals appear to be a conglomerate of male and female organs such as that it may be difficult to classify the baby’s sex without further examination GENDER- SOCIAL DIMENSION OF ONE’S SEXUALITY Color associated with newborn baby male-blue female-pink How the person must or must not behave male- strong Female- gentle, caring GENDER IDENTITY- A SENSE OF WHO WE ARE Transgender- a person’s biological sec does not align with one’s gender identity Transgender woman- a male who does not feel comfortable identifying as a man.
