SUBJECT APPROACH Also known as mimetic approach. Focus on the importance of the subject matter of content of the work. The Audience May Ask: What is the subject matter presented? What aspect of nature is imitated or depicted? Is it a river? A sea? A sky? A forest? A mountain? Is the subject matter illustrated realistically? In abstraction? On an impression. 4 APPROACHES TO ART CRITICISM 2. ARTIST APPROACH Art being the means the artist uses in expressing himself, art therefore becomes the extension of the artist. Through his work, we may be able to know objectively some aspects of his person. In this type of approach, we stress the relationship of the artist to his work. His way of revealing his character, traits and beliefs, philosophy, and other circumstances in life through his art works. 4 APPROACHES TO ART CRITICISM We know about Picasso a little from his painting Guernica. If the artist is bias to the working class, his work will inevitably reflect some sad economic realities of life. Thus, the interpretation of the artwork must involve the highlighting of the class or economic situation/structures within which Picasso's the art is produced. It is the intrinsic value of the artwork Didactic Value Give emphasis on what is moral. The artist is trying to tell the viewer something specific using art as their means of communication Religious Value The artwork suppose to increase awareness of man’s relationship to God or in his government (if government, it should give emphasis on the socio- political value). 4 APPROACHES TO ART CRITICISM Spoliarium is a painting by Filipino artist Juan Luna that depicts the aftermath of a gladiatorial battle in the Roman Colosseum. AESTHETIC APPROACH Beauty of art rests in its form, it is how the subject matter is handled and presented; how it is composed. Art is composed of various elements, and the main role of the artist is to select, organize, and manipulate the elements according to how the artist sees beauty. Audience may start from the size, the shape, and the medium used. He looks for the artistic use of lines, colors, and shapes in creating images. THANK YOU
