Summary
This lecture covers degenerative changes in the spine, including vertebral body-disc articulations, osteoarthritis of the spine, spondylotic changes in vertebrae, and degenerative disc changes. The lecture explains concepts like the annulus fibrosus and nucleus pulposus, and discusses radiographic findings. It's a valuable resource for undergraduate medical students.

Dr. Mohammed Ashraf,MD Lecturer of radiodiagnosis sinaiuniversity.net Degenerative change in the spine The vertebral body–disc articulations are cartilaginous joints. -Vertebral body endplates are covered by hyaline cartilage that is analogous to articular cartilage in other joints. The intervertebral disk is composed of three components: The annulus fibrosus, nucleus pulposus, and the cartilaginous endplates. Osteoarthritis only affects synovial joints. Therefore, in the spine, osteoarthritis can occur at the facet (zygapophyseal), atlantoaxial, uncovertebral joints (in the cervical spine at C3–C7), costovertebral, and sacroiliac joints. Degenerative change in the spine Spondylotic changes of vertebrae Radiographic findings : Sclerosis of vertebral end plates. Osteophytes formation. Narrowing of disc spaces. Degenerative change in the spine Degenerative disc changes Disc bulges and herniations The normal intervertebral disc is composed of a central gelatinous nucleus pulposus and a fibrous peripheral annulus fibrosus. - A disc bulge, or herniation, occurs when the substance of the disc (nucleus pulposus, annulus fibrosus, or both) extends beyond the disc’s normal margins. Degenerative disc changes Degenerative disc changes Degenerative disc changes General degenerative changes With aging: T2 shortening (hypointensity on T2-weighted images). Loss of disc space height may affect multiple levels. Degenerative disc changes Quiz ??
