New Mansoura University Faculty of Nursing Health education responsibilities and competencies: By the late 1980s the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) in the United States had identified seven major responsibilities for the health educator as well as the competencies and sub-competencies that demonstrate competency under each responsibility. Competency is defined as ‘the ability to apply particular knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values to the standard of performance required in specified contexts’. Core competencies are the minimum set of competencies that constitute a common baseline for all health promotion roles. They are what all health promotion practitioners are expected to be capable of doing to work efficiently, effectively and appropriately in the field. Discipline-specific competencies are the competencies that are specific to particular disciplinary areas in health promotion (e.g. research and evaluation; social marketing). They are not included in this set of competencies.. New Mansoura University Faculty of Nursing What benefits will Core Competencies have for people who work in health promotion? Health Promotion Core Competencies can be used to: Ensure there are clear guidelines for the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values needed to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion efforts efficiently, effectively and appropriately. Assist employers/managers to develop relevant job descriptions and a better understanding of health promotion roles in individual workplaces. Provide a tool for use in career planning and deciding on professional development and training needs. New Mansoura University Faculty of Nursing provide more opportunities for movement across roles and organizations within the health sector. Integrate training with the daily activities carried out in the work setting. Shape training programs and qualifications to make them more relevant for the work carried out in the field. Make performance appraisal processes more relevant and transparent. Promote better communication and team work in multidisciplinary projects by providing a common language and shared understanding of key concepts and practices used in health promotion. Contribute to greater recognition and validation of the value of health promotion and the work done by health promotion practitioners. Competency B: Distinguish between behavior that fosters and hinders well-being. Competency C: infers needs for health education on the basis of obtained data. New Mansoura University Faculty of Nursing Definition of health needs assessment Is a systematic method of identifying unmet health and health care needs of a population and making changes to meet those unmet needs. The present situation may have some undesirable characteristics that Motivate a person to consider a more desirable situation. EX. we might realize that we are overweight and "need to identify the causes and ways to resolve the problem New Mansoura University Faculty of Nursing Needs assessment technique: Data related to the health needs of the community can be obtained from two main sources: Primary sources: data which you collect during a needs assessment, using techniques such as interviews,focus group discussions. Secondary sources: including health center ,health post records, activity reports, research reports. New Mansoura University Faculty of Nursing Questions to ask when assessing health needs What is the problem? What is the size and nature of the problem? What are the current services? What do patients want? What are the most appropriate and effective solutions? What are the resource implications? What are the outcomes to evaluate change and the criteria to audit success? New Mansoura University Faculty of Nursing Responsibility 2: Planning effective health education programs Competency A: Recruit community organizations, resource people and potential participants for support and assistance in program planning. Competency B: Develop a logical scope and sequence plan for a health education program. Competency C: Formulate appropriate and measurable program goals and objectives. Competency D: Design educational programs consistent with specified program objectives. They are usually long-term and represent global visions such as “protect public health and safety.” Objectives define strategies or implementation steps to attain the identified goals. For example, after attending the class on hypothesis, the students will be able to formulate the hypothesis Behavior It denotes the behavior or action the learner is expected to perform after attending a class. It may refer to knowledge to be gained and action or skills student will be able to do. Standard It states the norms or acceptable level of performance expected from the student and it describes how well the behavior is to be done. Content It describes the subject, object or theme in relation to which the activity is performed. Competency B: Infer enabling objectives as needed to implement instructional programs in specified settings. Competency C: Select methods and media best suited to implement program plans for specific learners. Competency D: Monitor educational programs, adjusting objectives and activities as necessary. Evaluation will help to determine how effective you are in achieving your objectives. Making judgment about the future of the program.
