CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS EGCV2130 Semester – I – AY 2024-2025 LECTURE – FINISHING AND MODERN MATERIALS Paint Title and Content – Distemper Materials Varnish Ceramic Thermocol Finishing material - PAINT  Paints are coatings of fluid materials which are applied as a final finish to surfaces like walls, ceiling, wood and metal works.  The painting process includes preparing pre- formed material, base coating, drying, overlay coating and drying and the methods used to do these steps vary based on the different coatings and requirements. Finishing material - PAINT  Painting is done to protect the surface from environmental effects, to prevent the wood from decay and metal from corrosion, to provide a decorative finish and to obtain a clean, hygienic and healthy living atmosphere. Finishing material - Distempers  The main objective of applying distemper to plastered surfaces is to provide a smooth protective cover of the desired color, with improved aesthetic appearance of the structure's interior.  Distempers are water paints, washable or non-washable type, depending upon the medium used. Finishing material- Distempers  The surface to be distempered should be thoroughly rubbed and cleaned. The cracks, if any should be filled by lime putty.  The surface should be kept dry for about two months before applying distemper. Thus a primary coat is applied and is allowed to dry. Distemper is usually applied in two coats. Finishing material- Distempers Properties of Distemper:  They are generally light in color.  The coatings are generally thick.  They give reflective coating.  They are less durable than oil paints but are cheaper. Finishing material - Varnish ❑ Varnishes can be used to protect wooden surfaces like windows, doors, floors and roof trusses from atmosphere. ❑ Varnishes may be applied as a topcoat on worn finishes. ❑ Varnishes can be used to brighten the look of natural grains in wood. Finishing material - Varnish Depending upon the solvents used varnishes are classified as: ❑ Oil varnishes, ❑ Turpentine varnishes ❑ Spirit varnishes ❑ Water varnishes. Finishing material - Varnish The desirable characteristics of an ideal varnish are: ❑ It should give glossy surface. ❑ Should be durable. ❑ It should dry rapidly after application. ❑ It should not develop cracks after drying. ❑ It is commonly used on wooden surfaces. Modern Materials –Ceramic products  Ceramic tiles are made of earthen clay and water that is and these tiles have a beautifully natural look to them.  Glaze is applied externally to smoothen out the roughness. Ceramic tiles are less expensive as compared to some other tiles and have a wide range from very basic to very premium quality and finish. Ceramic tiles have such a huge range of designs, colors and sizes that you will surely be spoilt for choice.  Used in bathrooms, Kitchen, swimming pool, walls and roof tops. Modern Materials -THERMOCOL  Thermocol is a light and cellular plastic material used for sound and heat insulation of ceiling, walls, refrigerators and for air conditioning of the buildings. It is soft, light, strong and durable having compressive strength in the range of 11.7 to 14.4 N/mm2.  It has excellent heat, sound and electric insulating properties. Conclusion Understand the finishing materials Properties of finishing materials Understand modern materials and its applications
