Health Professions Skills MME 110 Lecture 1 Principles of Professional Education Learning Outcomes (LOs) By the end of this lecture student should be able to: 1. Differentiate between Profession and Health Care Profession. 2. Describe Health Care Professionals (HCPs). 3. Identify the common goals of Professional Education 2 What is a Health Care  Profession? A Health care profession is an occupation whose core element is work based upon the mastery of a complex body of knowledge and skills in health care services (treatment, management & care).  Health care professional is a provider of health care treatment and advice based on formal training and experience. (WHO, 2006, World Health Report 2006: working together for health. Geneva) 3 Who are Health Care Professionals? Health care Professionals are: o Disciplined group of individuals who adhere to ethical standards and are accepted by the public as possessing special knowledge and skills. o They acquire their knowledge and skills in a widely recognized branch of health sciences derived from research, education and training at a high level, and they are prepared to apply this knowledge and skills in the care of others. o They are also involved in scientific research to advance knowledge and enhance evidence-based health care. 4 Fundamental Characteristics of Health Care Professionals (HCPs) 1. Responsibility HCPs deal with matters of vital importance to their patients/clients and are therefore entrusted with great responsibilities and obligations. 2. Accountability HCPs hold themselves accountable for the quality of their work and the care of the patients/clients. 5 Cont’d 3. Specialized knowledge HCPs offer specialized services based on theory, knowledge, and skills that are relevant to their profession. 4. License to practice Specialized training and institutional recognition and registration to qualify them to practice in their respective specialty. 6 Professional Education  Professional education is an approach to specialized training in a recognized institution through which professionals acquire knowledge, skills and the competencies needed for proper evidence-based practice. 7 The Common Goals of Professional Education 1. Incorporating the knowledge, skills and values basic to a professional discipline. 2. Understanding the central concepts, principles, and techniques applied in practice. 3. Attaining a level of competence necessary for responsible entry into professional practice. 4. Accepting responsibility for the continued professional development. 8 The Role of Professional Education  Professional education is a response to societal needs for expert service provided by competent individuals.  The growth and development of a profession is a function of specific societal needs. 9 The Role of Professional Education Cont’d  Professional education responds to changes in social demands and changes in the field itself.  Therefore, professional education is both reactive and initiative.  For instance, most problem solving on the job is reactive and initiative because decisions need to be made and there is only short time available for searching suitable sources (including guidelines and guidance) as well as consultation with peers. 10 The Role of Professional Education Cont’d Ongoing/Lifelong  Professional education Learning determines the quality of services provided.  As changes in both practice and theory occur, knowledge increases and it is not enough to collaborate with peers.  Therefore, it is important to find ways to enhance professional practices and acquire new competencies. 11 The Role of Professional Education: Ongoing and Lifelong Learning Cont’d  No profession can effectively deal with the pressing changes of standards and ethical practices without continuous learning and development.  One way to improve competencies and practices is through continuous learning that allow communication and collaboration with peers. 12 Examples of Continuous Learning 1. Formal Learning: ○ A university or college course. ○ Training programs within the organization. 2. Social Learning: ○ Discussion and collaboration on social media. ○ Blogs and other related resources. 3. Self-directed Learning: ○ Researching and reading of the topic. ○ Listening to topic relevant podcasts or watching instructional videos. 13 Benefits of Life-long Learning 1. Renewed self-motivation 2. Recognition of personal interests and goals 3. Improvement in personal and professional skills 4. Improved self-confidence 14 The Guiding Principles for Professional Education 1. More is better 2. Clarify & prioritize outcomes 3. Create Collaborative, Reflective Learning Communities 4. Embrace online tools 5. Five Core Features 15 1. More is better  Long-term sustainable and intensive professional development is needed to affect not only an instructor’s knowledge and practice, but also foster change in student performance and achievement.  These are generally agreed upon outcomes of effective professional education. 16 2. Clarify and Prioritize the Outcomes  Clarity of desired learning outcomes.  It is necessary because it helps define and design the appropriate program model, features, and characteristics of effective professional development. 17 3. Create collaborative, reflective learning communities When communities of professionals from the same level, subject, school, or organization can interact and collaborate over time, professional development is more effective.. 18 4. Embrace Online Tools Online tools and technology provide powerful professional development opportunities. These can be used to complement but should not necessarily replace face-to-face activities. 19 5. Five Core Features Professional development best practices frequently include the following five core features: 1. Integrated content & pedagogy: Students tend to be more engaged through holistic, authentic learning, resulting in more flexible and critical thinking. For example, the more students learn, the greater the enjoyment of the processes, and more open to self-learning in future. 2. Coherence with standards and policies: Policy coherence is adopting the strategies and roles developed by government. For example, learning new techniques that is formulated by the government agencies without causing harm to others. 20 5. Five Core Features Cont’d 3. Active learning opportunities: Engaging students in deep learning and promote higher-order thinking skills like knowledge application, analysis, and synthesis. These include classroom activities or teaching-learning strategies that actively engage students with the course content such as small group discussion, problem-solving, role- playing, concept mapping, and case studies. 4. Mentoring/coaching/apprenticing: For example, mentorship in the Nursing Profession- Mentorship offers many benefits and opportunities for the nursing profession, where mentorship impacted the careers of nursing leaders. In this profession, mentors offer coaching, guidance and inspiration. 5. Individual learning: For example, learning new knowledge, skills, and develop competencies to improve the job performance. 21 Any Questions?
