ELT 403 Network Technology Foundation Dr. Sara Fouad Network Layer Protocols and Internet Protocol (IP) ▪ The Network layer encapsulation allows its contents to be passed to the destination (end device) within a network or on another network with minimum overhead. This communication between networks is called routing. Network Layer Protocols and Internet Protocol (IP) Network Layer Protocols and Internet Protocol (IP) Network Layer Protocols and Internet Protocol (IP) Protocols implemented at the Network layer that carry user data include: 1-Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) 2-Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) Grouping Devices into Networks and Hierarchical Addressing ▪ One of the major roles of the Network layer is to provide a mechanism for addressing hosts. As the number of hosts on the network grows, more planning is required to manage and address the network. ▪ It is more practical and manageable to group hosts into specific networks. ▪ the large network was separated into smaller networks called subnetworks or subnets. ▪ networks can be grouped based on factors that include: -Geographic location -Purpose: the volume and type of data may make it appropriate to group them into a network. -Ownership: grouping hosts based owner ship enhance data security. Grouping Devices into Networks and Hierarchical Addressing ▪ List several ways in which dividing a large network can increase network performance -Performance degradation -Security issues -Address Management Grouping Devices into Networks and Hierarchical Addressing ▪ Describe the purpose of further subdividing networks into smaller networks Classify and Define IPv4 Addresses ▪ Name the three types of addresses in the network and describe the purpose of each type Fundamentals of Routes, Next Hop Addresses and Packet Forwarding Sub-netting The Address 192.168.1.0 /24 using VLSM
