WAN Access Options WAN Technologies A WAN uses data links provided by carrier services to: access the Internet connect LANs in different locations of an organization to each other. WAN Access Options WAN Terminology CPE: Customer Premises Equipment DTE: Data Terminal Equipment DCE: Data communications equipment CO: Central Office See notes Leased Lines Also known as point-to-point link, serial link and leased circuit A P2P link that a customer uses exclusively Telecom companies offers different bandwidths standards, e.g. T1, T3, E1, E3,... Layer 2 protocol is usually HDLC or PPP. Wireless P2P (Microwave Links) ideal alternative for business communication between two buildings or sites where wired connection is either impossible, costly or impractical. Frame-relay packet switched technology point-to-point and point-to-multipoint (shared) cheaper than a dedicated line. Nowadays replaced by Ethernet WANs. Ethernet WAN Newer Ethernet standards using fiber-optic cables have enabled it as a WAN technology. Other names for Ethernet WAN :Metropolitan Ethernet (MetroE), Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS), and Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS). Multiprotocol Label Switching MPLS is a multiprotocol (can encapsulate packets of various network protocols) technology that directs data from one router/switch to the next. DSL DSL technology uses existing twisted-pair telephone lines to transport high- bandwidth data, and provides IP services to subscribers. VSAT a solution that creates a private WAN using satellite communications. WiMAX Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access high-speed broadband service with wireless access 3G/4G Cellular Most dominant cellular tech: GSM, CDMA, LTE
