Cell Biology 222 Lecture13 Prokaryotic Genetics Created by Dr. Najah AL-Baqami Genetics information in Bacteria: 1- Single circular chromosome (one copy). (human has 23 pairs of chromosome) 2- Extrachromosomal genetic: Double-stranded of circular DNA molecule called Plasmid. Genetics information in Viruses : Viruses genome can be DNA or RNA. The protein layer that surrounds and protects the nucleic acids is called the capsid. Conclusion: The structure of eukaryotic and prokaryotic genome is different. Circular DNA molecules located in some prokaryotic cells. A few thousands nucleotides base pairs (bp). Plasmids are naked (not associated with proteins). Carry gene for Antibiotic resistant. They can be transferred from one bacterial cell to another. Therefore, it can used in genetic engineering as gene transfer vectors. Page 353 Page 336
