Get an ABG, CBC, Chem 7 The practitioner in this example is telling the medical team to withdraw blood from the patient (ABG means arterial blood gas) and send the blood to the laboratory for testing (CBC means complete blood count and Chem 7 is a set of blood tests). This language is not just limited to doctors, nurses and/or medical practitioners. Other workers in the healthcare industry must master it as well – they may include medical billers, medical coders, medical assistants and more. Workers in the medical field who are not familiar with medical terms will be lost with their jobs and even have the potential to hurt patients. Why Medical Terminology is Important? 1- Speaking the Standardized “Language of Medicine” Medical terminology allows all medical professionals to understand each other and communicate effectively. When everyone understands what a condition, medicine, or procedure is, they are able to fulfill their roles accordingly, whether that is delivering medicine or billing for a medicine. 2- Improved Patient Safety Communication among all members of a healthcare team improves patient safety by reducing the number of mistakes. Healthcare professionals may see dozens of patients every day. To provide more efficient care, physicians or nurses may write quickly and write common abbreviations. All members of the care team should be able to understand these abbreviations and terms to provide the best care. 3- Health information systems(HIS): Healthcare IT systems rely heavily on medical terminology for data input, retrieval, and exchanges between healthcare providers and facilities. 4- It supports efficiency: The standardized language helps healthcare providers save time. It allows for quick, accurate documentation of patient information and facilitates efficient communication between care team members.
