Dr. Sabbir Rahman Shuvo Lecture 1 1 Learning objectives ▪ Definition ofSoil ▪ Various characteristic of Soil ▪ Physical ▪ Air ▪ Water ▪ Temperature ▪ Chemical ▪ Redox ▪ pH 2 What is soil The term Soil refers to the loose material from earth’s surface, a layer distinctly different from underlying bedrock. Agriculturally Chemically Microbiologically 3 Agriculturally, this layer is supporting plant life: by providing mechanical support and nutrients. Chemically, Soil contains multitude of nutrients, not found in underlying levels. For Microbiologist, Soil layer is unique in many ways - it contains a vast population of bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, algae and protozoa; it is one of the most dynamic sites of biological interaction in nature - here occurs many biochemical reactions concerned in the destruction and production of organic matter, weathering of rocks, providing nutrition for crops etc. 4 Components of soil in various fields. 5 Description of Soil Soil is composed of Five major components: Components Volume(%) Mineral Matter
