Introduction to HCI Jayvee Christopher N. Vibar, DIT Faculty: BUCS – CS/IT Dept. What is HCI? “Human-computer interaction is a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use and with the study of major phenomena surrounding them” (ACM SIGCHI definition of HCI) Computer factor – Different devices Smartphones, Desktop, Kiosks – Capabilities and Limitations Processing power – Operating systems – Rapidly changing interface technology Creating usable systems Human factor – Different users – Different conceptions and mental models – Different ways of learning, keeping knowledge and skills – Social aspects Cultural and National differences Digital divide User Interface (UI) Part of application that allows: – People to interact with computer – Computer to communicate results HCI = Design, Implementation and Evaluation of UIs. Ways to view HCI Task Design Technology Human Design Computer Science Applied Psychology Good Design User Centered Design (UCD) The process and result of designing with the needs of the user in mind. E.g. of specific user interface design principles 1. If an element (such as an Exit button) is repeated on multiple screen, then place that element in the same position on each screen that it appears. 2. It is more difficult to read all uppercase letters. USING ALL UPPERCASE LETTERS ALSO MAKES IT SEEM LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING AT YOUR AUDIENCE. Bad Design cost lives, money, & time Specific Cost of Bad User Interface Design Imagine being stuck in a room with no visible way to get out. Imagine being lost in a foreign country and being unable to communicate with anyone. Imagine being forced to make a decision with serious consequences when you don’t understand the choices. Imagine being incredibly hungry, but unable to figure out how to open the refrigerator. What would you feel? The same feeling of frustration, anger and helplessness one would experience each day when: - A group of buttons is displayed with cryptic icons whose meaning or function we cannot guess. - Having to dig to a very deep menu option. - Having to much of Modal Dialog Box. The Joy of Good Design Design for People - People’s tasks, goals and values drive development - Imagine actual users - Pay attention to people’s abilities and situation Prototyping Interfaces (Wireframes) Build a mockup of your UI » schematic sketches of the important screens in the software. –Paper prototyping –Interactive prototyping Image HTML Thank You
