HOW LANDFORMS AND BODIES OF WATER AFFECT TYPHOONS WHY ARE SOME PARTS OF THE PHILIPPINES NOT VISITED BY TYPHOONS WHILE OTHERS ARE FREQUENTLY VISITED? VOCABULARY Climatology=study of climate and their effects to life. Climatologist=scientist who deals with the study of climate and their effects. Meteorology=study of atmosphere and weather. Meteorologist are the scientists who deal with the study of atmosphere and weather. HOW LANDFORMS AND BODIES OF WATER AFFECT TYPHOONS There are many factors that can affect the strength, direction, and development of a typhoon. the landforms and the bodies of water around it. There are many factors that can affect the strength, direction, and development of a typhoon. the landforms and the bodies of water around it. Orography The study of the formation and topography of mountains and hills. 1. Effect of Landforms Orographic lifting occurs when air flows over mountains and is forced to rise, causing rain or snow over the mountains, which is called orographic precipitation. The air is warm and heavy with moisture because it originates from above the ocean, then it cools as it rises up the mountain and the moisture condenses as rain. Orograpic Precipitation 2. Effects of Bodies of Water Large bodies of water affect the strength of typhoons that hit adjacent landmasses. They determine whether air will be warm or cold, or whether its relative humidity will be high or low. Answers: 1. Windward side or side of the mountain facing the sea. 2. Windward side or the side of the mountain facing the sea. 3. Warm ocean waters Pause, Think and Recall 1. On which side of the mountain is rainfall from a typhoon greater? 2. On which side of the mountain is orographic precipitation evident? 3. What conditions of ocean waters will most likely cause storms? Homework: Answer in your notebook. Pause, Think and Recall at page 154. What is Project N.O.A.H? What is its primary concern?
