USE MODAL VERBS, NOUNS AND ADVERBS Objectives: At the end of the lesson, you will be able to: 1. Identify the use of modal verbs, nouns, and adverbs in a sentence 2. Use modals appropriately Modals (also called modal verbs, modal auxiliary verbs, modal auxiliaries) are special verbs. They are different from normal verbs like "work, play, visit..." They give additional information about the function of the main verb that follows it. They have a great variety of communicative functions. Directions: Identify whether the sentence contains a main verb only or a main verb with an auxiliary verb. Write MV for the main verb and AV for both. 1. She is reading a book. 2. They play soccer every weekend. 3. He has finished his homework. 4. The sun shines brightly 5. We are going to the park. Here are some characteristics of modal verbs They never change their form. You can't add "s", "ed", "ing"... They are always followed by an infinitive without “to” They are used to indicate modality allow speakers to express certainty, possibility, willingness, obligation, necessity, ability. They make questions by inversion ('she can go' becomes 'can she go?'). List of Modal Verbs can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must The verbs or expressions dare, ought to, had better, and need not behave like modal auxiliaries to a large extent and may be added to the above list Modal Verbs are used to express functions such as: 1. Permission 5. Lack of necessity 2. Ability 6. Advice 3. Obligation 7. Possibility 4. Prohibition 8. They are similar to modal verbs in a way that they also express modal meaning. However, they are different from modal verbs in the way they are used in a sentence. Modal verbs are used to add information to the main verb while modal nouns name a quality, state, or condition that state modality. Read and study the sentence below A. If Carl campaigns hard, his win is a certainty. B. Carl’s friends expressed their willingness to help Carl in his campaign. C. There is likelihood that the students will vote for Carl. Modal Adverbs Read and study the sentences below. 1. If Carl campaigns hard, he shall surely win. 2. Carl’s friends are willingly happy to help him in his campaign. 3. The students will likely vote for Carl. What do you call the underlined words in each sentence? Modal adverbs are similar to modal verbs and modal nouns because they express modality. However, they differ in form and the way they are used in sentences. Modal verbs are used to add information to the main verb. On the other hand, modal nouns name a quality, state, or condition that state modality while modal adverbs describe or give more meaning or information to verbs and adjectives. Assessment 1.
