Introduction to Assessment KIN/SRS 120 What is Assessment? Assessment is… ”the systematic process of gathering and analyzing specific information about an individual (client), and using the results for placement into a program(s) that is designed to work on the individuals strengths and abilities with their leisure, and to enhance the individual's ability to independently flourish in their pursuits” emphasis added (Peterson & Stumbo, 2000, p. 9) 2 • Systematic Process: Assessment process can be repeated in a consistent manner (valid, reliable, and documented) • Gathering specific info: The assessment focuses on those areas of practice defined by a well-articulated service model. Understanding the individual’s goals (strengths and abilities) • About the Individual: Assessment in person-centered and focuses on the unique context – Primary and secondary sources • Collaboratively: To help work as a team to come up with a plan for the person’s approaches and inter. 3 Key features in common • Gathering selected pieces of data • About an individual, involving a • Systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and reporting which • Results in the ability to make decisions for placement into programs that • Have been designed to reduce or eliminate problems so that the •Individual can independently flourish in their leisure 4 What is participant assessment? • Process • Measures: 5 Why do we need to assess? • Accurately measure a person’s skills, limitations, patterns and restrictions (categorize, identify, diagnose) • Determine if someone is eligible for service, support, continued support, etc. (screening process) 6 Why do we need to assess? • Employer/funding agent requires evidence • Legal obligation • Compare to others or outlined criteria 7 Assessment’s Role • First and foremost, it should drive our entire approach •Assessment allows us to get to know the participant as a whole person •In their environment, what’s meaningful to them? Or, what makes them “tick” 8 The Importance of Assessment 9 To put it simply… • Assessment is the process of getting to know the people we work. To build a professional relationship with so that we can support them achieve their best. 10 The 5 Principles of Assessment 1) The assessment process must yield dependable and consistent results to be useful 2) Individual placement into programs should be based on assessment results, not just opinions or judgements 3) The assessment process should provide baseline information in order to track progress 11 Two different types of information… Objective Information Subjective Information Types of Assessment Non-Standardized Standardized What should an assessment measure anyways? 14 The answer?
