# Bernoulli's Principle * Bernoulli's principle states that an increase in the speed of a fluid occurs simultaneously with a decrease in pressure or a decrease in the fluid's potential energy. * Bernoulli's principle is applicable to various types of fluid flow. ## How Wings Generate Lift The wing is designed so that the air travels faster over the top of the wing than under the wing. * Faster moving air = less pressure * Slower moving air = more pressure Pressure differential creates lift ## Airfoil Experiment * When blown, air travels faster over the curve than under it. * The pressure on top is lower, so the paper rises. ## Applications * Airplanes * Curveballs * Race cars * Chimneys * Atomizers * Bunsen burner ### Sample Problem Water travels through a pipe with a constriction. At point A, the area is $.25 m^2$ and the velocity is 2 m/s. At point B, the area is $.10 m^2$. Find the velocity at point B. $A_1V_1 = A_2V_2$ $(.25)(2) = (.10)V_2$ $V_2 = 5 m/s$
