Jigsaw Primarily a site tool o Almost indispensable o Sink openings in laminate countertops o Access openings in cabinet backs o Coping crown moulding o Cutting vent openings in ladders Great for curved or pierced cuts o Hole should be drilled first but plunge cuts are possible To plunge cut: Plant toe of shoe directly on surface Bring saw up to speed Gently lower the blade down into the surface o Make sure that the blade has teeth that go all the way to the tip Most have tilting base Many different blade types o Narrow, wide, up-cut and down-cut Narrow blades good for tight radii Wider for straight lines Down-cut for cutting with good face up Can cause the saw to spring up o Choose best for application Blade support is important o Blade should be properly set in roller o Holds the back of the blade, helps prevent drift Different methods of attachment o Set-screw – older method, requires tooling o Quick-set, no tool needed Some have a blower system (puffer) to get rid of sawdust ahead of the line Blade speed is measured by strokes per inch Some saws have a rotating head, allows to get closer to vertical parts Some blades oscillate (moves forward then back) as they move up and down, helps clear out sawdust from the kerf – good for thicker material and rip cuts – cuts faster Ways to avoid drift o Don’t push too hard o Sharp blade o Good blade support Exposed blade is hidden under work piece, be careful where you place your hands to support it
