# Working of Electrolytic Cell The electrodes connected to the positive terminal are called anode. The electrode connected to the negative terminal is called cathode. When an electric current is applied from a battery, anions (negatively charged) move towards the anode and are discharged there, losing their electrons. Oxidation reactions occur at the anode. Cations (positively charged) move towards the cathode and gain electrons from the electrode. Reduction reactions occur at the cathode. **Example:** 2NaCl(s) → 2Na+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq) 2Cl-(aq) → Cl2(g) + 2e- (at anode - oxidation) 2Na+(aq) + 2e- → 2Na(s) (at cathode - reduction)
