To what extent is eating food from outside impacting the health of school children? RESEARCH TOPIC: How eating food from outside impacting health. Objective -To study how eating food from outside, like fast food, street food, and packaged snacks, affects the health of school children. -This includes looking at their eating habits, checking the nutritional value of such foods, and finding out how it relates to health problems like obesity, malnutrition, and other lifestyle-related issues. - The goal is to promote healthy eating and suggest ways to improve food choices in schools. Introduction Maintaining a healthy diet is crucial for overall well-being and proper nutrition. It helps shield you from numerous serious health issues, including heart disease and diabetes. Incorporating a variety of foods into your meals and reducing your intake of salt and sugar are fundamental components of a nutritious diet. Reasons for Junk Food being unhealthy - Junk food is very high in saturated fats and sugars which can cause obesity. - Cheese in pizza is rich in saturated fats that can promote bad cholesterol levels. - Sauces in burgers often have high sodium content, contributing to increased blood pressure or hypertension. - Many types junk food contain white flour, which is a refined carbohydrate with limited nutritional benefits. Negative impact of junk food on school children -A diet high in junk food can cause fatigue, trouble concentrating, which can negatively affect academic performance. -The high levels of sodium and saturated fat found in junk food can lead to elevated blood pressure and a higher risk of heart disease. -Eating too many processed foods can interfere with digestion and cause stomach discomfort. -Junk food is often deficient in essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and fibre. This lack of nutritional value can result in deficiencies that negatively impact growth and development. -Most pizzas contain high levels of sodium, which can raise blood pressure concerns, especially in children. - Regular consumption of sugary foods can cause blood sugar spikes and increase the risk of developing diabetes. Impact of certain ingredients that we put in junk food 1. Emulsifiers - Emulsifier is a chemical that is like glue used in junk food to mix the ingredients and create a smooth texture. Impact – Emulsifiers are additives used in processed foods to enhance texture and extend shelf life. However, they can harm health by disrupting the body’s ability to change food into energy, and a higher risk of heart disease. 2. High-fructose corn syrup - High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a sweetener made from corn that contains more fructose than regular corn syrup. It is commonly used in processed foods and beverages, including soft drinks, baked goods, and candies. Impact – High-fructose corn syrup can cause diseases like obesity, diabetes, and fatty liver problems. 3. Food Colouring – Food Colouring are colours/dyes that are used to make foods more presentable and good looking. They are very harmful for health. Impact – Food Colouring can cause many harmful diseases like asthma, cancer depending on the quantity of food colouring consumed, and children can become hyperactive. 4. Trans Fat – Trans-fat is an unsaturated fat present in certain foods, and it is generally regarded as unhealthy. Impact – Excessive consumption of Trans Fats can increase the risk of heart problems, they can even block our arteries.. Need For Balanced diet -A diet that contains all the nutrients along with roughage (fibre) and water in right amount is known as a balanced diet or a healthful diet. A balanced diet can -  Prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer  Maintain a healthy weight  Boost your immune system  Improve your mental health  Strengthen your bones, muscles, skin, teeth, and eyes -TO TAKE A BALANCED DIET, YOU SHOULD: -Include a Variety of Fruits and Vegetables: Aim to eat fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables. Frozen vegetables are also a nutritious option. -Consume High-Fibre Starchy Foods: Base meals on foods like potatoes, bread, rice, or pasta. -Incorporate Protein: Add beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat, and other protein sources to your diet. -Opt for Dairy or Dairy Alternatives: Choose low-fat or fat-free milk, lactose-free milk, and fortified soy beverages. -Limit Foods High in Fat, Sugar, and Salt: Opt for foods with low saturated fats.
