That provides the body with stability and enables movement. 2 11/14/2023 3 11/14/2023 4 11/14/2023 5 11/14/2023 6 11/14/2023 Bone injuries Symptoms of a fracture: ❖Immediate pain ❖ inability to bear weight ❖ loss of motion in the limb ❖swelling 7 11/14/2023 The three most common injuries to bones are ❖ acute fractures (Sudden bending, twisting, or compression) ❖stress fractures ❖ bone contusions Acute fractures common in high-collision sports caused by sudden bending , twisting , and direct trauma to an extremity 8 11/14/2023 Simple or Nondisplaced Fractures bone is still in perfect position or alignment break is noted on an X-ray referred to as “hairline fractures” Displaced Fractures separation of the fracture segments. Displaced fractures frequently require reduction and may require surgery 9 11/14/2023 Impacted Fractures one part of the broken bone is pushing into the other, shortening the length of the bone and resulting in many small bone fragments. Example: fractures of the wrist when athletes instinctively try to break a fall with their outstretched hands 10 11/14/2023 Compound or Open Fractures the bone pierces through the skin. If there is any skin compromise (laceration, abrasion, bleeding) around a potential fracture Example: high-impact sport, football 11 11/14/2023 Fracture Dislocations break in a bone as well as damage to ligaments and muscles, causing the broken bone to dislocate at the joint. Gross angulation or deformity at any joint suspicion for a fracture dislocation Example: motor vehicle accidents. Stress Fractures overuse injury in which normal bone is subjected to repetitive stress, resulting in microfractures They most commonly occur in the tibia, femoral neck , or metatarsals. weight should not be placed on the bone while it is healing, the athlete must use crutches for a period of time. The amount of rest required depends on the type and degree of stress fracture. 12 11/14/2023 Bone Contusion They occur from direct trauma to a bone but do not result in fracture. local inflammatory response, and a hematoma(bruise) usually forms in the surrounding soft tissue. pain, loss of motion of the limb, and enormous bruising very common injuries in contact sports(hockey and football players). 13 11/14/2023 14
