30-0 9-20 24 INTRODUCTION " ~.,. ~ ~ George E. Fox Car l Rich ard Woese i0-09-2024 HISTORY... ❖ Woese and Fox's 1977, paper on the discovery of the Phylogenetic Tree of Life Archaea, triggered a revolution in the field of Bacteria Archaea Eucarya evolutionary biology by showing that life was divided into not only prokaryotes and eukaryotes. ❖ Rather, they revealed that prokaryotes comprise two distinct types of organisms, the Bacteria and the Archaea. ❖ In. subsequent years, molecular phylogenetic analyses indicated that eukaryotes and the Archaea represent sister groups in the tree of life. · What makes archaea to stand differently? Cell structure? Yes. they are different from bacteria Different genomic material? Yes. Unique ecological roles to play? Yes. These differences may not seem like a big deal to most of us........
