“When someone is in your heart, they're never truly gone. They can come back to you, even at unlikely times.” Mitch Albom For One More Day If you had the chance to spend one more day with someone, who would it be? Why? What would you want to do with that person? Describe your perfect day with them. The Author: Mitch Albom Mitch is a Jersey boy and was born in Passaic, New Jersey. He was then locally raised in Oaklyn, New Jersey Mitch attended various schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and he went to Hebrew School in Haddon Heights where he was highly influenced by a local rabbi there. He got a bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University in Massachusetts – pursuing a degree in Psychology (this is the college where he encountered Morrie Schwartz, who would eventually change his life!) Later he received his Master’s degree from Columbia University. His dream career as a child was to become a musician. In fact, he pursues this dream on the amateur level throughout his life. Mitch’s Early Careers He began as an amateur boxer. Briefly he was a nightclub singer. Award winning sports writer. Named #1 Sports Columnist by Associated Press Sports Editors 12 times Radio Host Monday Sports Albom. Freelance columnist for Detroit Free Press. Currently in a band Rockbottom Remainders, whose members are all writers. Albom is the keyboard player (his wife is the singer). This band is composed entirely of writers like Mitch. Sports Career Mitch is an award winning Sports journalist from is days with the newspaper and is now a panelist on The Sports Reports on Sports Center. He also has a syndicated talk radio show “Monday Sports Albom.” Mitch’s original writing career was actually compiling his various sports articles into non-fiction Sports books…kind of like “the best of…” with all of his articles. So it begins…Tuesdays with Morrie Tuesdays with Morrie was the first non-sports book that Mitch Albom wrote. It was written “by accident” when Mitch reconnected with a former college professor from Brandeis University, Morrie Schwartz. Morrie was being interviewed on Nightline with Ted Koppel in different segments over the course a year. Morrie was dying from Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS). One night, Mitch happened to watch and recognized his beloved Sociology professor. It had been 16 years since he had seen Professor Schwartz, but he vowed to track him down and tell what an impact he had made before it was too late. Morrie had been the professor everyone loved in college. People fought to get into his classes. He was dynamic, interesting, quirky, and was the kind of guy who ended up off topic during each class, but still somehow managed to convey more life lessons than most. Before ALS took over his body, Mitch remembers Morrie often singing and dancing as part of class. He never missed a chance to show off his moves. He was the “fun teacher.” “love each other or perish” – W. H. Auden After tracking him down, they reconnected. Morrie was no longer keeping office hours at the university because his condition had deteriorated so much. In tribute, Morrie and Albom met every Tuesday – just like the normal office hours Morrie kept while still a professor. During these meetings, Morrie tried to help Mitch let go of his “go getter” attitude and find true love and happiness in his life. He got through. In fact, after being introduced to Mitch’s long time girlfriend, he coaxed Mitch into prioritizing the people in his life instead of the careers in his life. Mitch married Janine Sabino only months after Morrie’s death. Morrie and Mitch’s meetings together consisted of 16 Tuesdays – Mitch refers to these as Morrie’s final “class”. Hence the name “Tuesdays with Morrie” Albom, who had always found Morrie’s lectures intriguing even as a student, began recording these conversations. Eventually, they would be published as the book Tuesdays with Morrie and the proceeds could be used to help offset the medical costs Morrie’s wife was left with. Morrie-Nightline https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=jzRslO849DM&feature=youtu.be “I didn’t want to do any sequels. No ‘Wednesdays with Morrie’. I wanted to… delve deeper into life and death and the connections between the two…” For One More Day Mitch’s Summary For One More Day was inspired by my own mother and my own childhood. The idea came from a sudden wave of sadness I felt when I realized my mother, approaching her 80s, would not be around forever. What would I do when I couldn’t pick up the phone and have the regular conversations, the typical laughs, the gentle scoldings? Albom used many instances from his real childhood to help us discover things about him, as well as his mother. Pepperville Beach Mitch grew up in South Jersey, and modeled the area in his novel after the area near Haddonfield. The interesting thing about this story is that it flashes between current times and Chick's (the main character) past. For One More Day Major Theme - Forgiveness Forgiveness is a key concept for all of us. We need to forgive people in our lives for their well being as well as for ourselves.
