BOCA RATON POLICE SERVICES DEPARTMENT Standard Operating Procedure 31.02 INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Revised: October 17, 2011 I. PURPOSE: The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure is to establish guidelines regarding the authority, duties and responsibilities for the administration of the Internship Program. II. POLICY: It is the policy of the Boca Raton Police Services Department to assist students in meeting educational goals and objectives and to provide the students with practical experience in the law enforcement field. III. RESPONSIBILITIES: A. The Professional Standards Internal Affairs sergeant or his/her designee shall be the Internship Program coordinator and will be the liaison between the participating colleges and universities and the Agency. The coordinator will be responsible for the intern’s application process, schedule, and evaluations. B. The Internship Program coordinator will advise the intern of his/her duties and responsibilities regarding the Internship Program. C. All Agency personnel will assist in facilitating the Internship Program to establish a wellrounded evaluation period. IV. ELIGIBILITY: A. The Department may accept student interns who meet the following requirements: 1. Attend a state accredited college or university. 2. Have successfully registered for a law enforcement internship class with the college or university. 3. Supply a letter of intent from the college or university’s internship program director. The application process will be a minimum of three weeks and applicants will complete the following steps: 1. Download and submit the civilian background packet, waivers, and accompanying documentation from the Department’s website. 2. Interview with the Internship Program coordinator. 3. Submit to a polygraph. 4. Pass a background investigation, including but not limited to driver’s license and criminal history check. B. The Internship Program coordinator will ensure the intern is fingerprinted and photographed for a Department identification card. VI. NOTIFICATION: A. Once the applicant is selected for the Internship Program, the following will occur: 1. The Internship Program coordinator will notify the intern of his/her acceptance via a letter that includes a start date and time. 2. The Internship Program coordinator will issue a memorandum to all divisions that participate in the program with the name(s) of the intern(s) involved in the program and the scheduled dates for assignment in each division. 3. The Internship Program coordinator will ensure that the intern understands his/her schedule. 4. The coordinator shall ensure that the intern reports and is introduced to personnel in the division to which they will be assigned. 5. The coordinator will instruct the intern on proper attire and decorum while participating in the Internship Program. VII. COORDINATOR RESPONSIBILITIES: A. The Internship Program coordinator shall be responsible for the following: 1. Conducting an orientation session with the intern during the first day of the schedule. 2. Ensuring all documentation is completed and forwarded to the appropriate college/ university. 4. Scheduling the intern’s activities while working with the Department. 5. Ensuring that the Internship Program goals are met and that the interns are involved in observing and receiving practical experience. 6. Ensuring that the intern adheres to the Boca Raton Police Services Department’s rules and regulations. VIII. A. INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES: Each intern shall be responsible for the following: 1. Completing the required amount of hours in accordance with the college/university requirements. 2. Wearing proper attire while engaged in intern activities. 3. Conducting himself/herself in a professional manner 4. Maintaining the confidentiality of any information obtained through the Internship Program. 5. Ensuring that all required documentation required by the college/university is supplied to the division intern coordinator. B. Interns shall be limited to non-enforcement assignments within the Department. IX. INTERN EVALUATIONS: A. After an intern has completed an assignment with a Department employee or unit, an Intern Evaluation form shall be completed rating the performance of the intern and returned to the Internship Program coordinator. B. The Internship Program coordinator will complete the required college or university’s evaluation of the intern and return it to the intern’s college or university. Approved: Daniel C.
