INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM Dr.Priya Sajith November 27, 2023 www.gmu.ac.ae COLLEGE OF MEDICINE Learning Objectives Identify the structures of the skin and accessory organ List and describe the functions of skin Identify and describe the lesions and pathological conditions that affect the integumentary system Describe laboratory test and clinical procedures used in diagnosing and treating skin disorders Identify and define commonly used vocabulary terms pertaining to the integumentary system Structure and Function Integumentary system is composed of the skin and accessory structures Epidermis 5 sheets of plate like cells made of keratin First layer of skin 14-28 days for entire layer replace Stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum and stratum basale Dermis Inner layer of skin Made of connective tissue Blood vessels, hair follicles, sweat glands, nerve endings etc Hypodermis The subcutaneous tissue just deep to the skin made up of mostly adipose tissue Stores fat, anchors the skin, and acts as a shock absorber Nails Senses insects before they sting or bite. Protects from physical trauma, heat loss, sunburn.
