A sleep disorder that is characterized difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep Acute Usually lasts several days to several weeks (has to be less than 3 months) Caused by an identifiable stressor Treatment includes non-pharmacological methods and attempts to reduce the stressor Chronic Sleep disturbance that last more than 3 months Primary Secondary Epidemiology Most prevalent sleep disorder in the general population Symptoms occur in 33-50% of the adult population Occurs with daytime impairment in 10-15% of the population Risk Factors Increasing age Female Comorbid disorders Various shift work Lower socio-economic status Difficulty initiating sleep Subject Difficulty maintaining sleep ive Waking up too early Signs of Sleep that is chronically nonrestorative or poor in quality Insomn Daytime impairment ia Alleviating factors Assessment/Diagnosis: Pre-Sleep Conditions Behaviors that may affect one’s sleep even if it is not the patient’s intention Examples: -Spending “extra” time in bed -Lighting pre and during sleep -Anxiety -Gym or physical activity -Temperature Assessment/Diagnosis Sleep-Wake Schedule Sleep-Wake Schedule Findings Time to fall asleep Even though these are not set Number of times waking parameters, generally those up during the night with insomnia will have: Wake time after sleep Sleep latency >30 min. onset Wake after sleep onset > 30 min. Normal Sleep times for Sleep efficacy
