Infection Control in Dental Radiology Rationale: – Purpose is to prevent the transmission of infectious disease – Infectious diseases may be transmitted from a patient to the dental professional – From the dental professional to a patient Equipment of Infection Control • PPE • Hand Washing • Sterilization and Disinfection of Instruments – Critical instruments Instruments *used to penetrate soft tissue or bone – Semi critical instruments *Instruments that contact but do not penetrate soft tissue or bone – Noncritical instruments *Instruments or devices that do not come in contact with mucous membranes •Infection Control in Panoramic radiography is very simple •AII one needs is a barrier for the bite block •Make sure the lead apron is on •Film loaded on to the cassette •Stay outside of the active radiation area Role for Single-Use Disposable Items LEARNING OBJECTIVES 1. Describe the role for single-use disposable items in dentistry. 2. Give examples of commonly used single-use disposable items in dentistry. 3. Describe advantages and disadvantages of using single- use disposable items. Disposable items are not intended to be cleaned and sterilized for reuse on another patient, because they are usually not heat-tolerant and cannot be reliably cleaned. Examples of single-use disposable items include anesthetic carpules, syringe needles, scalpel blades, prophylaxis cups and brushes, matrix bands, wooden and plastic wedges, dental dams, saliva ejectors, and plastic orthodontic brackets Surface barriers used to protect equipment and other environmental surfaces in dental treatment areas include clear plastic wrap, bags, sheets, tubing, and plastic- backed paper or other materials that are impervious to moisture. These barriers are disposable and should be removed and discarded between patients. Gloves and masks are to be changed between patients and not reused. Practical Dental Infection-Control Checklist Single-Use (Disposable) Devices ❑ Are single-use devices used for one patient only and disposed of appropriately? Aseptic Technique for Parenteral Medications ❑ Are aseptic techniques followed when using single- or multiple-dose medication vials and IV fluids? ❑ Are single-dose vials used for parenteral medications when possible? ❑ Are single-dose medication vials used for one patient only and disposed of appropriately? ❑ Are IV fluid bags and equipment used for one patient and disposed of appropriately? ❑ Are sterile devices (i.e., needle, syringe) used to enter single- or multiple-dose medication vials? ❑ Are manufacturer and/or local policies followed in terms of storage, use, and expiration? ❑ If multidose vials are used, is the access diaphragm cleaned with 70% SUMMARY Disposable items are not intended to be cleaned and sterilized for reuse on another patient, because they are usually not heat-tolerant and cannot be reliably cleaned.
